How the way of explanation arose, and how the view of emptiness was established. Firstly, those who wish to realize Suchness must rely on the words of the Buddha. However, the scriptures are also diverse due to the various thoughts of the beings to be tamed. So, what kind of scripture should one rely on to seek the profound meaning? One must rely on the scriptures of definitive meaning to realize Suchness. Then, what is definitive meaning and what is provisional meaning? This is established from the perspective of what is to be expressed: that which teaches the ultimate truth is definitive meaning, and that which teaches the conventional truth is considered a scripture of provisional meaning. As it is also stated in the Teaching of Inexhaustible Intelligence: "What is a sutra of definitive meaning? What is a sutra of provisional meaning? Those sutras that teach the establishment of conventional truth are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach the establishment of ultimate truth are called definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach various words and letters are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach the profound, difficult to see, and difficult to understand are called definitive meaning." So, what is the way of teaching conventional truth that leads to provisional meaning, and how is the way of teaching ultimate truth that leads to definitive meaning taught? This is also very clearly taught in that sutra. In that very sutra, it says: "Those sutras that speak of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, individuals, persons, those born of power, youths, agents, and experiencers, using various names, and that teach as if there is a master over things that have no master, are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-conceptualization, unbornness, unoriginatedness, absence of sentient beings, absence of life, absence of persons, absence of a master, and that teach the door of liberation, are called definitive meaning." Therefore, those that teach in the way of cutting off elaborations such as selflessness and unbornness are definitive meaning, and those that teach self and so on are said to be provisional meaning. Selflessness and unbornness are ultimate truth,

It should be understood that form and so on are conventional truths. As it is also said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: 'As the Tathagata has explained emptiness, one should know the distinctions of the definitive meaning sutras. Whatever sutras teach about sentient beings, individuals, and persons, all those teachings should be understood as provisional meanings.' It is also said in the Madhyamaka Aloka: 'Therefore, only speaking of the ultimate truth is of definitive meaning, and the opposite is of provisional meaning, and this should be understood.' It is also said in the Noble Ornament of the Light of Wisdom Entering the Realm of All Buddhas: 'Whatever is of definitive meaning is the ultimate truth.' It is also said that unbornness and so on are taught as definitive meaning by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence. Therefore, it should be determined that unbornness and so on are solely the ultimate truth. The Madhyamaka Collections of Reasoning and their commentaries should be regarded as truly explaining the definitive meaning, because they extensively establish the ultimate truth that is free from all elaborations such as arising and ceasing. Why are these two teachings called provisional and definitive meanings? Because this meaning cannot be led elsewhere, it is called definitive meaning or meaning-understood, because this meaning is the meaning of suchness, and is the ultimate to be established. It cannot be led further than this, and others cannot lead it, because it possesses the valid means of proof. As it is also said in the Madhyamaka Aloka: 'What is definitive meaning? It is that which is spoken based on valid cognition and the ultimate truth, and it cannot be led elsewhere by others.' The implication of what is said in this way is that one can know the provisional meaning. This meaning cannot be taken as it is said, but one must explain its intention and lead it to another meaning, or one can simply take it literally, but that alone is not the ultimate suchness, and one must still seek its suchness elsewhere, so it is a provisional meaning or a meaning that needs to be led. The sutras of definitive meaning are literal, so if unbornness and no-self etc. arise from those sutras, then birth and
