Therefore, merely becoming accustomed to this, one cannot abandon the seeds of afflictions like them, and therefore one cannot be liberated from samsara. As it is said in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation: Having thus stabilized the mind on the object, one should analyze with wisdom. Thus, when the appearance of knowing arises, the seeds of universal ignorance will be completely abandoned. If it is not so, like the non-Buddhists, one will not be able to abandon afflictions merely through samadhi. As it is said in the Sutra: Although worldly people meditate on samadhi, they do not destroy the concept of self. That is because afflictions are very turbulent, and they meditate on samadhi here with superior conduct. It is like what is said. Thus it is said. Among them, "meditating on samadhi" refers to the samadhi with the characteristics of non-discrimination and clarity, etc., as mentioned earlier. "Even if one meditates on it, one cannot abandon self-grasping" is "they do not destroy the concept of self." Because self-grasping has not been abandoned, afflictions will arise again, which is "afflictions are very turbulent." So, what kind of meditation will lead to liberation? As quoted earlier, the end of that sutra immediately says: If one separately contemplates the selflessness of phenomena. And so on. If one separately observes the selfless phenomena and generates the wisdom that understands the meaning of selflessness, and if one cultivates and meditates on that separate observation, that is, after obtaining the view of selflessness, then, that is the cause of obtaining the fruit of nirvana, that is, the cause of obtaining the fruit of nirvana or liberation. Thus it is said. So, just as one can attain liberation by meditating on it, can one attain liberation by meditating on something else without it? Any other cause cannot be pacified, that is, if one cultivates a path different from this, suffering and afflictions will not be pacified without it. Therefore, the wisdom of selflessness is the only method to cut the root of samsara, which has been very clearly shown. In the Stages of Madhyamaka Meditation, it is also quoted to refute the Heshang, so one must gain certainty about this. Because the ascetics of non-Buddhists also have many qualities such as samadhi and clairvoyance,
