Moreover, the five superknowledges are common to both non-Buddhists and Buddhists, so even if one attains such a special samadhi, one will not be liberated from samsara by that alone; rather, one will be bound to samsara by them. Therefore, one should not be content with merely practicing shamatha, but should seek the wisdom of vipashyana, which is the individual analysis of selflessness. Even if one does not fully understand how to practice the actual practices of the first dhyana and so forth, one must clearly understand the method of practicing shamatha or mindfulness, which was previously explained. In the profound sutras such as the Prajnaparamita Sutras, the nine ways of settling the mind are taught, which are arranged in the Madhyamaka-krama, as previously mentioned. Their meaning is explained in the Sutra-alamkara. The noble Asanga summarized this in the Yogacarabhumi, the Samgrahavastu, and the Uttaratanatra. Just as the Samgrahavastu assigns both shamatha and vipashyana to the Shravakabhumi, the Shravakabhumi explains this in detail. The meaning of these is explained in the Madhyamaka-krama and the Prajnaparamita-upadesha. Furthermore, from the Madhyantavibhaga, the method of abandoning the eight laxities and the five faults is taught, which explains the method of practicing shamatha. One must carefully examine these essential points and understand what is revealed therein, avoiding self-fabrication. For some meditators, these names are not even heard, while others, although they have encountered these words during their early studies of large treatises, have not fully understood their meaning, so in their later practice, they consider these to be unnecessary and discard them. As a sign of not having properly distinguished the object, when they attain some samadhi that can be compared to shamatha, they seem to think that this is the samadhi of emptiness. If they attain the ninth stage of mind, which is common to both internal and external paths, they think that they have completed the complete stage of Anuttarayoga Tantra. Many people confuse samatha and vipashyana and think that they have an uninterrupted stream of non-conceptual wisdom. If one has a good understanding of what was previously said, one will not be confused by pleasant names such as aimless, signless, and definitive meaning meditation. By understanding the meaning of the samadhi, one will know whether one is on the right or wrong path. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the stages of practice of samadhi as taught in those reliable treatises.

Should become wise. Here it says: From the Sutras and the great commentaries, The order of accomplishing Samadhi, which is well-spoken, Because the expression is obscure, those with little wisdom, Not understanding as it is, is the fault of their own wisdom. By telling others, about those good treatises, Thinking that there is no instruction for cultivating non-conceptualization, Not seeking in the existing treatises, in the place where it does not exist, With many efforts, searching and thinking to find it. Such people, even the Samadhis of outsiders and insiders, cannot distinguish, Then, What is the difference between the Great Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle, the Vajra Vehicle and the Paramita, What need is there to say that one can distinguish as it is? Seeing this reason, in easy words, I will explain the great treatise's, Method of cultivating Samadhi. For those friends who have studied the great treatise for many years, Do not abandon your own wish-fulfilling jewel, Do not take others' pebbles, Please know that you have a treasure. In the treatise you have studied, from the meaning of the instructions, Seeing that there is no अलग (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal meaning), Shakyamuni said: Much hearing is happiness in the forest, You should also contemplate the meaning of what was said. For the path of Shamatha, which is to settle without conceptualizing anything, The method of accomplishing it first and the measure of accomplishment, Focus well, Even if you do not fully understand, Meditators who only hope for diligence, Those people should still rely on the wise, Please know the method of cultivation as it is. If not, for the Victorious One's teachings, Taking a break for a while, the harm is small. Thus, Maitreya Asanga's, The method of cultivating Shamatha with treatises, Explaining this is also for, The Victorious One's teachings to remain long. In the stages of the path of a great person, by learning the conduct of a Bodhisattva, It has been explained how to train in Shamatha, which is the essence of meditation. Having explained it in this way, as you wish, by placing the mind on a single object, the non-conceptualization that abides where it abides, And, the clarity that is free from sinking, And the difference of benefits, one should not be content with Shamatha that has bliss, One must generate the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of that one and only Suchness without inversion, thereby cultivating Vipassana, If not, then mere Samadhi is common to non-Buddhists
