Therefore, the initial practitioner is one who has not yet attained mindfulness focused on a single object, and has not yet touched the state of single-pointedness of mind. Among them, the initial practitioner who purifies afflictions is based on the mindfulness that, having attained mindfulness, desires to purify the mind from afflictions, and discerns the characteristics of each, as well as the mindfulness that is accustomed to acceptance. Thus it is said. Furthermore, at the beginning of the fourth stage of yoga, it is said that having attained mindfulness, one cultivates the path of detachment from both the mundane and the supramundane. Therefore, the previously mentioned shamatha (calm abiding) should be cultivated first, and then vipassanā (insight) of the mundane and supramundane should be cultivated. This detailed explanation of how to abandon afflictions is not clearly elucidated in other Abhidharma treatises. Therefore, even the predecessors who were skilled in both the earlier and later Abhidharma did not clearly elucidate the method of first cultivating single-pointed shamatha and then, based on that, abandoning afflictions. Therefore, if one does not properly ascertain what is said in the Śrāvakabhūmi (Hearer's Ground), one might mistakenly think that the lowest level of dhyāna (meditative absorption) and the formless realms is the preliminary stage of the first dhyāna, and that the first of the six mindfulnesses mentioned therein is the discernment of individual characteristics. Therefore, one might mistakenly think that the initial arising of the mind gathered by the preliminary stage is the discernment of individual characteristics. If one holds this view, it is highly unreasonable. This is because without having attained shamatha, the preliminary stage of the first dhyāna cannot arise, and without having attained that preliminary stage, one cannot attain shamatha. Furthermore, the discernment of individual characteristics is analytical meditation, so cultivating it cannot newly attain shamatha that was not previously attained. As the quote from the Vastutva (Actual Basis) of the Ground states, single-pointedness in the desire realm does not have pliancy, and without having attained pliancy, shamatha is not accomplished, as stated in the commentaries and so forth. Therefore, without having attained the first preliminary stage, one cannot attain shamatha. Therefore, the first of the six mindfulnesses of the first preliminary stage is the beginning of the cultivation of vipassanā gathered by the preliminary stage, and not merely the beginning of the first preliminary stage, because before that, one must go through shamatha gathered by the preliminary stage.

Since all samādhis collected by the first application before obtaining samādhi are only one-pointedness of mind, according to the major treatises, it seems very rare to even attain tranquility, let alone insight. The way to rely on tranquility to be free from attachment to desire is: If one is only accustomed to the many characteristics of the previously mentioned tranquility, such as clarity and non-discrimination, and has not cultivated either of the two insights, then even the manifest afflictions of the desire realm cannot be temporarily prevented, let alone abandoning the seeds of afflictions and the obscurations of knowledge. Therefore, if you want to attain the first dhyana that is free from attachment to desire, you should rely on that tranquility to cultivate insight. So, how does it not contradict what was previously said that merely being accustomed to tranquility can suppress the manifestation of afflictions? There is no contradiction. The previous situation was in terms of being included in worldly insight tranquility, while here it is in terms of the tranquility collected by the first application that precedes both insights. The insight that accomplishes detachment also has two ways of making one free from attachment: through the aspect of truth and through the aspect of tranquility and roughness. Here, the way to accomplish detachment is shown through the latter path. The basis for this is: both non-Buddhists who do not have the view of selflessness at all, and Buddhists who have the view of selflessness, can practice. So, what kind of path should be cultivated to eliminate afflictions? The *Yogācārabhūmi* says: 'For this, in order to be free from desire and attachment, the diligent yogi attains freedom from desire and attachment by following seven kinds of attention.' What are those seven? The answer is: 'They are the attention of distinguishing characteristics separately, arising from aspiration, extreme remoteness, collecting joy, examining, ultimate union, and the fruit of ultimate union.' As it is said. The last one is the attention at the time of entering the main practice after being detached from desire, so it is what is to be accomplished, while the first six are what can accomplish it.
