In the 《ས་མདོ་སྡེ་དགོངས་འགྲེལ་》, it is said that all samādhis of the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna are included in the samādhi of śamatha-vipassanā, therefore, if one wants to be proficient in samādhi, one should be proficient in both śamatha and vipassanā. Although there are many necessities for generating such a samādhi, the attention of śamatha, the main necessity is to generate the realization of vipassanā. Moreover, there are two types of vipassanā: one is the commonality between outsiders and insiders, which has the aspect of tranquility and violence that only eliminates manifest afflictions; the other is the vipassanā common to both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna of the inner path, and the vipassanā with the aspect of the non-self reality that completely eliminates the seeds of afflictions, which is a unique characteristic of Buddhist insiders. The former is a complete branch, but not indispensable; the latter is an indispensable branch. Therefore, those who seek liberation should generate vipassanā that understands the non-self reality. That is, if one obtains the śamatha contained in the preliminary stage of the first dhyāna, as mentioned earlier, even if one does not obtain the dhyāna above it or the śamatha of the formless realm, one can rely on it to practice vipassanā, thereby attaining liberation from all the bonds of saṃsāra. If one does not realize and practice the non-self reality, then even if one obtains the śamatha mentioned earlier, and the worldly vipassanā obtained by relying on it, even the peak of existence that has eliminated all manifest afflictions below the realm of nothingness, one will not be liberated from saṃsāra. As it is said in the praise that does not respond to praise in 《赞叹应赞》: “Those who do not incline to your Dharma, People blinded by ignorance, Even if they reach the peak of existence, They will still experience suffering and create karma. Those who follow your teachings, Even if they do not attain the actual dhyāna, Like wearing down the eye disease of the demon, They can still reverse saṃsāra.” Therefore, it is said that for all the noble paths of attaining the stream-enterer and once-returner, the śamatha that serves as the basis for vipassanā is the śamatha contained in the preliminary stage of the first dhyāna mentioned earlier. Similarly, for all the instantaneously enlightened arhats, it is also the śamatha mentioned earlier.

Therefore, it should be known that only by cultivating vipassanā can one attain the state of an arhat. If one has not previously attained the samādhi of śamatha as described above in one's mindstream, then the actual realization of vipassanā that focuses on how much or how it is will not be possible to arise, as will be shown below. Therefore, even a yogi of unsurpassed yoga, even if he does not generate vipassanā that focuses on how much with the aspect of coarse and subtle, and the śamatha accomplished by it, he must generate a śamatha. And the time when it first arises is when it arises in the first stage of the two stages of the generation stage and the completion stage. In short, one must first cultivate a śamatha, and then relying on it, with vipassanā that has the aspect of coarse and subtle, one progresses in a gradual path up to the peak of existence; and with vipassanā that has the aspect of the reality of selflessness, one must traverse the five paths to liberation or omniscience. This is sealed by the general teachings of the Buddhas, and no yogi should transgress it. This is a general summary of how to progress from higher to higher paths by relying on śamatha. Third, the way to progress on the mundane path in particular is explained in two parts: first, it is explained that one must attain śamatha before progressing on the path with the aspect of coarse and subtle; and second, how to become free from attachment to desire by relying on śamatha. The first part is: by cultivating the path with the aspect of coarse and subtle through the gate of discriminating individual characteristics, one must first obtain the śamatha described above. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "By it, it is increased, by increasing, it goes for a long time, by the abiding of the entity, it is attained." This means that by obtaining the ninth mind, which is accompanied by pliancy, as described above, one relies on it to increase the samādhi, thereby accomplishing the entity. That is to say, from the ninth mind onwards, until one has not obtained attention, it is the first stage of attention; after obtaining attention, wanting to purify afflictions, cultivating attention that discriminates individual characteristics is said to be the first stage of purifying afflictions. Therefore, by cultivating discriminating individual characteristics, one must first obtain attention. As it says in the Hearer's Ground: In this attention
