It will become. At any time, when his attention becomes firm, stable, and solid, and faith arises in the completely pure object of focus, and when the characteristics of the aspects of calm abiding and insight are also completely grasped, then, he will begin to practice whichever of the mundane or supramundane paths he wishes to follow. Thus it is said. Among these, mundane insight is: the meditation of the aspect of peace and roughness, viewing the lower ground as coarse and the upper ground as peaceful. The supramundane insight spoken of in the Hearing Place is: the meditation of viewing the four truths as having sixteen aspects, such as impermanence. The main thing is the view of realizing the selflessness of the person. Thus, having obtained the aforementioned attention of calm abiding. Then, what kind of person does not walk the supramundane path in this life, but walks the mundane path? From the Hearing Place: Then, who are those who in this life only walk the mundane path and not the supramundane path? It is said: There are four. That is to say: all those non-Buddhists, and even Buddhists, who previously practiced calm abiding, are dull-witted. Similarly, even if their faculties are sharp, but their roots of virtue have not fully ripened. And bodhisattvas who wish to attain enlightenment in a future life, not in this life. Thus it is said. Among these, all the yogis of non-Buddhists who have attained the aforementioned calm abiding do not analyze and cultivate the selflessness of the person with discriminating wisdom. Because they do not believe in selflessness. Therefore, either they only cultivate the non-discriminating calm abiding itself, or they only meditate on the insight of the aspect of peace and roughness, so they only walk the mundane path. Buddhists, if they are dull-witted people who were previously only accustomed to the settling meditation of calm abiding, and mostly practiced it, then they do not like to analyze the meaning of selflessness with discriminating wisdom and meditate on it. Or they like it, but cannot understand the meaning of selflessness, so in this life they only walk the mundane path. Either they only cultivate that settling part, or it is the aspect of peace and roughness.

It is merely for the sake of cultivating insight. Even if sharp-witted Buddhist followers understand the meaning of selflessness, but if the roots of virtue for directly realizing the truth have not yet matured, then in that lifetime they will not be able to generate the uncontaminated noble path that transcends the world, so it is said that they only proceed by worldly paths. It is not that they cannot cultivate insight that focuses on selflessness. It is also possible for a Bodhisattva's enlightenment to be obstructed by one lifetime, that is, the last existence, in the next life, from the path of joining onwards, the four paths are generated in the continuum. During the time of being obstructed by one lifetime, the noble path is not generated, so in that lifetime it is said that they proceed by worldly paths. It is not that they have not realized the meaning of selflessness. This is in accordance with what is said in the Abhidharmakośa: "From autumn to Vairocana's enlightenment, all meditations end in one, before that the liberation divisions are the same." This is the way of attaining Buddhahood according to the Hinayana school. It is not the view of the venerable Asanga himself. Thus, whether non-Buddhists cultivate the path with aspects of quiescence and agitation to abandon manifest afflictions, or Buddhist followers cultivate the meaning of selflessness to abandon afflictions from the root, both must first obtain the samādhi of śamatha previously described. Therefore, the śamatha previously described is necessary as the basis for both internal and external yogis to abandon afflictions. Moreover, both Mahayana and Hinayana yogis must cultivate that samādhi. In the Mahayana, all yogis of both tantra and pāramitā vehicles must cultivate śamatha. Therefore, this śamatha is the foundation for all yogis to traverse the path, and it is extremely important. The śamatha described in the tantric texts also involves cultivating by focusing on the deity's form, or hand gestures, or letters, etc. Apart from the difference in the object of focus and some differences in the method of generation, it is necessary to abandon the five faults of samādhi, such as laziness, and the way to rely on their antidotes, such as mindfulness and awareness, and then to obtain the ninth mental abiding and the arising of physical pliancy from it, etc., all of which are common. Therefore, this samādhi is extremely vast. Considering this
