If I am seized by the mind of renunciation that seeks liberation, it will become the path to liberation. If it is seized by the precious mind of bodhicitta, it will also become the path of the Great Vehicle. For example, even the act of giving a handful of food to an animal, or guarding a single precept, if seized by these motivations, will in turn become the accumulation of the path to liberation and omniscience. However, here we are not examining whether one can go to the path of liberation and omniscience through the seizing of another path, but rather examining which path the samadhi itself goes to from the perspective of its own nature. Although the Madhyamikas and Cittamatrins disagree on how to determine the object of the view of vipassana, in general, there is no disagreement on the common recognition of shamatha and vipassana and the manner in which these realizations are generated in the continuum. Therefore, the noble Asanga, in the Bodhisattvabhumi, the Viniścayasaṃgraha, the Abhidharmasamuccaya, and the Śrāvakabhūmi, separated shamatha and vipassana, and in the practice of shamatha, he taught that it is practiced through the stages of the nine mental abidings. Moreover, since this is explained in detail in the Śrāvakabhūmi, they do not consider these samadhis to be the practice of vipassana. Because in these texts, vipassana is taught separately from the nine mental abidings, and its practice is also explained separately in the Śrāvakabhūmi. Similarly, in the Madhyamika stages of meditation and the instructions of the Prajñāpāramitā, the nine mental abidings are taught separately as the path of shamatha and the path of vipassana. Moreover, what is taught in the Maitreya's teachings is no different from what is explained by Asanga, so all the great chariot masters seem to have the same intention on this. If it is said that from what is said in the Śrāvakabhūmi, bliss and clarity may arise, but since there is no profound non-conceptualization, it is merely shamatha. If there is non-conceptualization, then it will become the samadhi of emptiness, then what is the meaning of the profound in the profound non-conceptualization? Is it to determine the conclusion of the view through the wisdom of discrimination, and then to abide in non-conceptualization on top of that? Or is it merely to abide in a state of not conceptualizing or thinking about anything? If it is the former, then we also consider that to be the samadhi of emptiness. If you also think so, then there is the question of whether or not there is an understanding of the view of reality.

Separating the two, those who have a view, placing the view first and cultivating non-mentation, are meditating on the samadhi of profound emptiness. Those who do not have an understanding of the view and meditate without any mentation, their meditation is not meditating on profound emptiness, it should be proclaimed separately like this. One should not say that all meditation that does not think of anything is meditation on the aimless, or the signless, or emptiness. If one thinks that all meditation that does not think of anything, does not examine anything, whether or not one has a view that understands emptiness, is the samadhi of emptiness, then one must accept that these samadhis of the aspect of calm abiding spoken of in the Hearer's Ground mentioned earlier are also samadhis of emptiness, even if one does not want to, because when they are placed in samadhi, if the power of mindfulness and awareness decreases, except for some occasions such as vigilance, there is no cultivation without any mentation such as 'this is this, this is not that'. Therefore, it is said in the Explanation of Intent that the samadhis that accomplish calm abiding are focused on the image without discrimination. Also in the Hearer's Ground it says, 'At that time, because there is no discrimination, one focuses on that image, and with that focus one places mindfulness one-pointedly on that, but one does not look, one does not distinguish, one does not distinguish thoroughly, one does not completely conceptualize, one does not completely examine.' Because it is said like that about calm abiding among the two, calm abiding and insight. And again in the same text it says, 'Having obtained the mind of calm abiding in this way, if due to the faults of forgetfulness and unfamiliarity, signs and discriminations and afflictions that are close appear, show the path of appearance, become the object of focus, then for all these occurrences, like this, through the power of the faults seen earlier, make it without mindfulness and without attention. In this way, because of the lack of mindfulness and the lack of attention, that object of focus will be destroyed, and if it is eliminated, it will be close to abiding in the nature of non-appearance.'
