This is said when only practicing shamatha. When practicing shamatha, the qualified treatises say that one should abide in that samadhi without guarding after examination. Therefore, considering all non-conceptual meditations as the practice of meditating on emptiness is a matter for the wise to laugh at. In particular, all the meditations that are said to be without mindfulness and without mental activity are considered to be meditating on emptiness, which has also been well refuted by the teachings that have been heard. Furthermore, in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation, it says: The nature of shamatha is merely single-pointedness of mind. This is the general characteristic of all shamatha. And, in the Quintessence of the Perfection of Wisdom, it also says: Focusing on the mind of various appearances, one should abandon the speech of the mind and practice shamatha. The speech of the mind refers to the discriminating thoughts that say, 'This is this,' and so on. Furthermore, previously in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra, many sutras and treatises of the great chariots were cited, saying that shamatha is single-pointedness of mind, etc., and it has been repeatedly explained that shamatha is non-conceptual. Therefore, there are two types of non-conceptuality: non-conceptuality that meditates on emptiness, and non-conceptuality that does not comprehend emptiness at all. Therefore, one should not take all the bliss-clarity-non-conceptuality that arises as the meditation of emptiness. Thus, these are only brief indications. One should strive diligently to understand the methods of practicing shamatha and vipassana as explained by Maitreya and Asanga, etc. If one does not do so, one will mistake some samadhis that are not yet established in shamatha and abide in non-conceptuality as vipassana that cuts the root of existence, and boast of being without objects, wasting time, and will undoubtedly deceive oneself and others. The treatises of qualified wise and accomplished masters say that when newly practicing shamatha, one should only abide in non-conceptual abiding meditation, and when first practicing vipassana, one should examine and meditate by distinguishing each with the wisdom of discernment. However, taking all conceptual thoughts as grasping at truth and abandoning all of them, and understanding well in reverse from the qualified treatises, even though one has not found the unerring view of selflessness, one meditates on the meaning of profound vipassana that does not conceptualize anything, which is like

It seems that only the Khenpo Hwashang's tradition is different from other traditions. Take a close look at the three stages of the 'Stages of Meditation' and you will understand. Secondly, in general, the method of progressing on the path based on calm abiding is: As mentioned earlier, through obtaining the samadhi and focus of non-discrimination, it becomes clear. So, is it enough to merely cultivate this non-discrimination with characteristics such as non-discrimination? No. Because the purpose of generating this kind of samadhi in the continuum is to generate insight (vipassana) that destroys afflictions. If you do not generate insight based on it, then no matter how familiar you become with this samadhi, you will not even be able to abandon the afflictions of the desire realm, let alone abandon all afflictions. Therefore, it is necessary to cultivate insight. Furthermore, there is no other way to transcend beyond the two types of insight: the insight that progresses through the worldly path to abandon manifest afflictions, and the insight that progresses through the transcendental path to abandon the seeds of afflictions from the root. As stated in the 'Hearer's Ground': 'Thus, the yogi who has attained focus, having entered into the small joy of abandonment, there is nothing else to progress beyond that, there are only two. Which two? Namely, the worldly and the transcendental.' Thus it is said. Therefore, whether one cultivates the insight of the worldly path or the insight that goes through the transcendental path by obtaining calm abiding or focus, the one who wants to cultivate it will cultivate the previously obtained calm abiding many times. By cultivating in this way, the extreme pliancy and one-pointedness of mind will greatly increase, and the calm abiding will also become very stable. Furthermore, one should also become skilled in the characteristics of calm abiding and insight. After that, one begins to cultivate the path that one wants to go through either of the two paths. As stated in the 'Hearer's Ground': 'For the yogi who is a beginner and possesses focus, he thinks: I shall practice through the path of worldly or transcendental practice, therefore he repeatedly practices that focus. As he practices repeatedly, day and night pass, and his extreme pliancy and one-pointedness of mind increase, expand, and widen.'
