No. If one does not cultivate the meaning of selflessness here to eliminate afflictions, then how should one determine and cultivate its meaning to eliminate afflictions? In this regard, although this path can eliminate other manifest afflictions of the desire realm, it is said that it "separates from desire and attachment," so it is mainly eliminated through the antidote to desire and attachment. And this desire and attachment is the desire and attachment to the five objects of desire here, so the antidote to it is to look at the faults of the objects of desire from many aspects, and then start from the opposite direction of clinging to desire and attachment, and through habituation, one can be separated from attachment to desire. Here, even if one can clearly distinguish the faults of desire and the merits of the first dhyana without reversing them, and have a firm understanding of their respective characteristics, if one has not achieved quiescence beforehand, then no matter how much one habituates to contemplating these faults and merits, one cannot eliminate afflictions. Similarly, even if one has achieved quiescence, if one does not observe with insight, then no matter how much one cultivates it, one cannot eliminate afflictions. Therefore, one must eliminate afflictions by cultivating both quiescence and insight. This is the classification of all elimination of afflictions. In this way, the characteristic of being able to clearly distinguish the faults and merits of the upper and lower grounds sometimes comes from hearing and sometimes from thinking, so it is a mixture of hearing and thinking. After becoming familiar with it in this way, one transcends hearing and thinking, and focuses entirely on the meaning of tranquility and grossness in the form of cultivation, which is the attention that arises from faith. Here, the *Śrāvakabhūmi* says: "One should cultivate quiescence and insight by focusing on that sign itself." And it is also said to cultivate quiescence and insight in the sixth attention, and it is said to focus on the six objects such as meaning in the first attention, which are often said to be insight in other occasions, so although these are not cultivating the view of selflessness, they are not contradictory to insight. Therefore, in the occasions of these attentions, one cultivates in the manner of both quiescence and insight, thereby eliminating afflictions, and the method of cultivation is: repeatedly observing the meaning of distinguishing tranquility and grossness, which is cultivating insight; and at the end of observation, focusing on the meaning of tranquility and grossness.

Where to abide is to meditate on calm abiding. The second and first mental activities of meditating in this way are the antidotes to refutation. Thus, When the practice of alternating between calm abiding and insight meditation becomes habitual, and the antidote to great desire realm afflictions arises, it is called the extremely secluded mental activity. Also, when alternating between calm abiding and insight meditation, if one is able to abandon intermediate afflictions, it is the mental activity of gathering joy. Thereafter, when one sees that the desire realm afflictions that hinder virtuous deeds do not arise while abiding in samadhi and when rising from it, one does not make a rough distinction, thinking, "I have abandoned afflictions," but rather observes: Is it that I do not arise without being separated from attachment to desire, or do I not arise having separated from attachment? In order to awaken this, if one focuses on an extremely lovely object, one sees that attachment arises. In order to abandon it, one delights in practice, this is the mental activity of observation. This abandons the pride of thinking one has abandoned what one has not abandoned. Thereafter, again, as before, one separately observes the meaning of quiescence and coarseness, and having done the conclusion of observation, one abides single-pointedly, both having done and practiced. When the antidote to small desire realm afflictions arises, it is called the mental activity of ultimate practice. The third, fourth, and sixth mental activities are antidotes to abandoning afflictions. Thus, when small afflictions are abandoned, all manifest desire realm afflictions are destroyed, and for a while, they do not arise at all. But the seeds are not completely destroyed. In this way, one can be separated from attachment to nothingness and below. But one cannot prevent the manifest afflictions of the peak of existence, therefore one cannot transcend samsara. However, relying on meditation, one can also obtain the five superknowledges. These are not written because of fear of many words. They exist in detail in the *Yogacarabhumi-sastra*, one should look there. The methods of accomplishing the actual practice of meditation and so on are not available now, therefore there are no places to lead to astray by them. However, if one gains an understanding of these that is not just literal, then it seems very helpful for cutting off the wrong paths of other samadhis. Such are the samadhis of the four dhyanas and the four formless absorptions.
