Being overly attached to the object of meditation, and the desires associated with it, are the four things mentioned earlier. Thus, the four practices such as guarding the sense doors, which were taught earlier during the breaks between meditation sessions, are very important for preventing both sinking and excitement. Furthermore, if you understand these causes and strive to prevent them, it will be very helpful in cutting off sinking and excitement. Therefore, even subtle sinking and excitement should be recognized with mindfulness, and no matter what their nature, they should not be accepted but must be rejected in every way. If this is not done, it will be a fault of samadhi called "non-manifestation," as stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga. Therefore, even if subtle distractions and wandering thoughts cannot be cut off at first, do not abandon them thinking they cannot be cut off. If they are not strong and do not have a very long continuity, do not think that they are weak and short-lived and do not accumulate karma, so they do not need to be cut off. Those who "do not manifest" in order to abandon these are actually deceiving those who seek samadhi, pretending to know how to accomplish pure samadhi when they do not. This is because it goes against the way of practicing samadhi established by the venerable Maitreya and others. Similarly, in preventing sinking and excitement, excitement and distraction usually interfere first, so you must strive to cut them off. When you strive in this way, and the gross excitement and distraction disappear, you will gain a little stability. At this time, you should strive to guard against sinking. When you exert effort to guard against sinking, excitement will again interfere with stability in a more subtle way than before. Therefore, strive to cut it off, and when it disappears, the stability will increase. At this time, sinking will also arise, so strive to cut off sinking. In short, withdraw your mind from external excitement and place it on the internal object of focus, seeking stability. Once stability arises, alternately apply strong vigilance against sinking and clear awareness. By alternating between these two, you will achieve flawless samadhi. Do not rely solely on clarity with an aspect of grasping, and expect to gain stability with mere clarity without awareness. Second, sinking, excitement and

How to act at the time of separation: As previously stated, cut off even subtle sinking and excitement and meditate. Or, when the mind enters a state of equanimity where it does not turn into sinking or excitement, if you make effort or strive, it becomes a fault of samadhi, so you should cultivate equanimity as an antidote to it. As it is said in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "When there is no sinking or excitement, and you see the mind resting peacefully on that object, then you should relax your effort and cultivate equanimity, and at that time you should remain as long as you wish." So it is. So, why does making effort or striving become a fault? This is because when the mind is excited, it is drawn inward, and when it is sinking, it is lifted upward. By meditating in this way, when you gain confidence that sinking and excitement will not arise in each session, you maintain and protect yourself with great vigilance against sinking and excitement, just as in the beginning. If you act in this way, as it is said in the Later Two Stages of Meditation: "If you make effort when the mind has entered into equanimity, then at that time the mind will become distracted." As it is said, because of distraction, you need to know how to relax at that time. However, relaxing is relaxing effort, not abandoning the strength of holding. Therefore, cultivating equanimity is not done at all times when sinking and excitement have not arisen, but from the time when the force of sinking and excitement has weakened, because there is no equanimity when sinking and excitement have not arisen. So, what kind of state is equanimity? In general, there are three kinds of equanimity: the equanimity of feeling, the equanimity that is one of the four immeasurables, and the equanimity of action. Here, it is the equanimity of action. Its nature is as it is said in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra: "What is equanimity? It is the equanimity of mind, free from all afflictions, and the gentleness of mind, the natural inclination, the ability of mind, and the compliance of mind, with regard to the object of the aspect of calm abiding and insight, which is the action of turning without effort." As such, it should be known. When you have attained such equanimity, when you are meditating on samadhi, at the time when sinking and excitement have not arisen, you should manifest that equanimity and abide without making strong effort. This object.
