Meditate! When you cultivate the perception of appearance on the path of tranquility and insight in this way, if the focus on the object is not clear and the appearance is weak from the beginning, then through the habituation of meditation, that cause and that condition will make the focus on the object clear and the appearance strong. If it is clear and the appearance is strong from the beginning, then it will become even clearer and even more apparent. Therefore, even if the object is clear from the beginning, one should meditate, let alone when it is not clear. As for how to grasp the sign of appearance, as it is said therein, "Grasp the sign of appearance from the light of a lamp, the light of a fire, or the disc of the sun." This meditation on the sign of appearance should be done not only during meditation but also at other times. Excitement is when the mind runs to objects such as form and sound due to attachment. For this, one should bring to mind the object of aversion, which is the cause of gathering the mind inward. As soon as excitement subsides, one should equally place the mind on the previous object. The first stage of meditation says, "When one remembers previous excitement and playfulness, etc., and sees the mind becoming excited from time to time, one should pacify excitement by bringing to mind things that will cause aversion, such as impermanence. Then, one should strive to let the mind enter that object without any effort." The Essence of Madhyamaka also says, "Excitement is pacified by focusing on impermanence, etc." And, "Distraction is gathered by looking at the faults in the sign of distraction." The Compendium of Trainings also says, "If there is excitement, it should be thoroughly pacified by focusing on impermanence." Therefore, if excitement is strong or lasts for a long time, temporarily let go of meditation and cultivate weariness, which is the key, rather than repeatedly gathering and placing the mind. For excitement that is not so strong, one should gather the distracted mind and place it on the object. The Condensed Perfection of Wisdom says, "When the mind becomes excited, it should be reversed by the method of calm abiding." And the Sutra says, "The mind should be completely placed."

Therefore, in counteracting dullness, it is said in the 'Ground Chapter'. In general, if the mind is agitated, one should focus on the object of focus; if the mind is dull, one should focus on the object of joy. As it is said in the 'Hearer Ground': 'Thus, when the mind is gathered inward, if one sees that it has become dejected or suspects that it will become dejected, then, at that time, one should increase and delight with any kind of increasing sign or intermediate change. This is increasing the mind. If one asks: How can one focus? When increasing, if one sees that the mind is agitated or suspects that it will be agitated, then, at that time, one should also gather the mind inward and focus on tranquility.' Thus it is said. For an agitated mind, one should not remember pleasant objects, because that is the cause of external distraction. Identifying the causes of arising dullness and agitation is: In the 'Reality of the Ground' it says: 'What is the sign of dullness? That is, not guarding the sense doors, not knowing the measure of food, not being diligent in the yoga of not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, not abiding in mindfulness, engaging in foolish actions, being greedy for sleep, not knowing the method, having lazy intention, diligence, mind, and observation, and habituating to tranquility, not completely purifying tranquility and remembering one aspect of tranquility, the mind being as if in darkness, and not delighting in focusing on the object of focus.' Thus it is said. The sign of dullness here should be understood as the cause of dullness. Among them, 'having laziness' should also be combined with the three: diligence, mind, and observation. Again, in the same scripture it says: 'What is the sign of agitation? As before, the four: not guarding the sense doors, etc., and engaging in desire, having an untamed aspect, the mind not being weary, not knowing the method, as before, having very increasing intention, etc., not being accustomed to diligence, not purifying increasing and meditating on one aspect of it, and remembering relatives, etc., any dharma corresponding to agitation, causing the mind to be distracted.' Thus it is said. The sign of agitation is the cause of agitation. Very increasing is joy.
