The characteristic of equanimity is. It says in that very text: What is the characteristic of equanimity? It is when the mind is made equanimous by whatever object, and when one does not exert extra effort towards that very object. So it is said. Also, the time for cultivating equanimity, It says in that very text: What is the time for equanimity? It is when the mind has no sinking or excitement in the direction of calm abiding and insight. So it is said. Thus, the ways of generating flawless samadhi that have been explained are as stated by the Venerable Maitreya in the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, as it says: Abiding therein, the state of being workable, all purposes are accomplished, abandoning the five faults, it arises from the cause of relying on the eight applications. Laziness and the instructions, forgetting and sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. Abiding and the state of abiding therein, cause and the state of being the result, not forgetting the object of focus, realizing sinking and excitement, manifestly applying to eliminate them, when pacified, then abiding properly. So it is said. Therein, abiding therein is exerting effort for the sake of eliminating opposing factors, which is abiding therein, and from that, a workable samadhi of mind arises. That is also the basis or place for the miraculous feet that accomplish all purposes such as direct perception, so it accomplishes all purposes. How is such a samadhi generated? It arises from the cause of relying on the eight applications of application for the sake of abandoning the five faults. The five faults are: At the time of application, laziness is a fault, because one does not apply to samadhi. At the time of diligently applying to samadhi, forgetting the instructions is a fault, because if one forgets the object of focus, the mind cannot be placed evenly on the object of focus. At the time of even placement, sinking and excitement are faults, because those two make the mind unworkable. At the time when sinking and excitement arise, not striving is a fault, because one does not pacify those two with it. At the time of being free from sinking and excitement, the application of application is a fault, if sinking and excitement are combined into one, then there are five, but if separated individually, then there are six faults, as in the Stages of Meditation.

Thus they spoke. The antidotes to these are eight acts of abandonment. Among them, there are four antidotes to laziness: faith, aspiration, effort, and pliancy. Then, the antidotes to forgetfulness, dullness and excitement, non-application, and application are, in order: mindfulness, awareness that discerns dullness and excitement, application of the mind, and equanimity that allows it to rest naturally. These have already been explained in detail. These are the supreme instructions for accomplishing samadhi. Therefore, the great master Kamalashila's three stages of meditation, and other great Indian scholars, have explained them many times when accomplishing samadhi. Also, in the commentary on the Lamp for the Path, it is explained in the context of accomplishing calm abiding. Although the previous Lamrim lamas have also given some rough explanations, it seems that those who wish to meditate on contemplation do not know how to do it, so it has been extensively determined. This is the common instruction for all the instructions on cultivating single-pointed samadhi, keeping it free from dullness and excitement with mindfulness and awareness. Therefore, it should not be regarded as a special dharma of the characteristic vehicle that is not needed for mantra, since it is also taught in the tantras of unsurpassed yoga, so it is common. As it is said: In the second chapter of the first section of the glorious Sambhuti: "The samadhi of aspiration, the foot of miraculous power endowed with the act of abandoning, abiding in a secluded place, abiding in detachment, abiding in cessation, completely transformed by correct abandonment, with that aspiration, one should meditate without being too depressed or elated." Thus, it is also taught in the same way for the three samadhis of diligence, investigation, and mind. The previously explained workable samadhi itself becomes the basis for accomplishing qualities such as miraculous powers, so it is like a foot, so it is the foot of miraculous power. There are four doors to accomplishing it: obtaining it with strong aspiration, obtaining it with long-term diligence, and obtaining samadhi by distinguishing the object, so it is called the samadhi of aspiration, and even the samadhi of diligence and investigation. Relying on the seed of the previous samadhi existing in the mind,
