The single-pointedness of mind, called samadhi, is explained in the commentaries on the Madhyāntavibhāga, etc. Being too lax is being too loose, and being too elevated is being too tight; one must cultivate it by avoiding these two. Second, based on that, there are three stages of arising of abiding of mind: the actual stages of arising of abiding of mind; the way it is accomplished by the six powers; and the way it has four mental engagements. First, among the nine abidings of mind, placing the mind on this and that means completely gathering the mind from all external objects and directing it towards the internal object. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: "The mind is directed towards the object." Continuously placing means that the mind that was initially placed does not wander elsewhere, but continuously abides on that object. "Do not let its continuity be scattered." Re-placing means that if one is distracted to external objects due to forgetfulness, one recognizes this and again attaches the mind to that object. "Having quickly realized the distraction, again place it there." Close placing, in the First Stage of Meditation, it is said that it refers to knowing that the previous mind has wandered and abandoning it, and that this mind, having abandoned distraction, strives to abide on that object. And in the Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom, it is said that it refers to repeatedly gathering the mind from its naturally vast state, making it subtle, and placing it higher and higher. "The wise one gathers the mind inward, higher and higher." This is in accordance with the Hearer's Ground. In the Hearer's Ground, it says that first placing mindfulness nearby, so that the mind does not move outwards, means generating the power of mindfulness and not letting forgetfulness scatter outwards. Taming means contemplating the qualities of samadhi and thereby rejoicing in samadhi. "Then, seeing the qualities, tame the mind in samadhi." In the Hearer's Ground, it says that if the mind is disturbed by the five objects such as forms, the three poisons, or the signs of men and women, one should first regard these as faults and not let these ten signs steal the mind. Pacifying means regarding distraction as a fault and thereby pacifying the displeasure with samadhi. Distraction
