Counteracting excitement is done by praising and expanding the object. As it says in the Madhyamakahṛdaya, "By meditating on a vast object, (the mind) becomes expansive." It also says, "One should also praise excitement by seeing the benefits of diligence." It also says in the Śikṣāsamuccaya, "If one is discouraged by this, one should cultivate joy and praise it." Therefore, all the great scholars and siddhas have unanimously said that the most important antidote to counteract dullness is to contemplate the benefits of the Three Jewels and the mind of enlightenment, as well as the qualities of having leisure and endowments being meaningful, etc. Just as splashing cold water on a sleepy face, one needs to be able to awaken the mind. This depends on gaining experience through analytical meditation that distinguishes the various aspects of the benefits. The cause of dullness arising depends on what, namely, lethargy and sleep, and the dharma that leads to these two, namely, the mind being in a state of darkness. Even if one cultivates the antidote of being accustomed to bright appearances, dullness that depends on these will not arise, and dullness that has already arisen will be counteracted. In this regard, the conduct is to walk, and to keep the characteristics of bright appearances well in mind, and to practice repeatedly. Or, by correctly uplifting the mind with any of the six recollections of the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, discipline, generosity, and the gods, or other pleasing objects. And to recite the dharma that reveals the faults of lethargy and sleep, and to look at the directions and the moon and stars, and to wash the face with cold water, etc., these are explained in the Śrāvakabhūmi. If dullness is very subtle and only occurs once, then one should tighten the mind's grip and meditate. If dullness is thick and seems to occur repeatedly, then one should postpone meditating on samādhi, and cultivate these antidotes as appropriate, and meditate after the dullness has cleared. If the object that the mind is holding, whether it is internal or external, is not clear, and the mind is like being enveloped in darkness, presenting a state of either light or heavy, if one meditates without eliminating it, then dullness will be difficult to cut off. Therefore, as its antidote, one should repeatedly cultivate the appearance of light. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi, "With a mind that has appearance, has light, is radiant, and is without darkness, one should correctly
