Because of the ground, and also in the commentary, it says: If one is afflicted by sinking due to dullness and sleep, or by any of the near afflictions of absorption, then that is internal mental wandering. Therefore, because the mind sinks due to the power of dullness and sleep, it is said to be internal wandering. Also, in the Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said: Although sinking is explained in the context of near-afflictive wandering, the wandering explained there can also be virtuous, so it is not necessarily afflictive. Therefore, dullness is: In the Compendium of Abhidharma, it says: What is dullness? It is the unserviceability of the mind that belongs to the category of ignorance, and it has the function of being a friend to all afflictions and near afflictions. Therefore, it is said that the part of ignorance is the heaviness of body and mind and unserviceability. In the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: What is dullness? It is the heaviness of body and the heaviness of mind, that is, whatever is the unserviceability of body and the unserviceability of mind. Sinking is: the way the mind holds the object loosens, so that it does not hold the object very clearly or firmly. Even if there is clarity, if the way of holding the object is not very clear, it will lead to sinking. In the Middle Stages of Meditation, it says: When the mind does not clearly see the object, like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, then one should know that one has fallen into sinking. Therefore, I have not seen a clear grasp of the characteristics of sinking from other great treatises. Sinking has two types, virtuous and neutral, while dullness is either non-virtuous or obscured and neutral, and is only a part of ignorance. From the great treatises, it is also said that in order to eliminate sinking, one should bring to mind pleasant objects such as images of the Buddha, and cultivate luminosity, thereby elevating the mind. Therefore, one should prevent unclear objects like darkness descending on the mind, and the lowering of the mind's way of holding. Both the clarity of the object and the strictness of the way of holding are necessary, and mere clarity of the object and mere clarity of the subject are not sufficient. Excitement is easy to recognize, but sinking seems difficult to understand because it has not been clearly grasped from reliable great treatises, and it is very important.

It seems obvious, and it is easy to mistake this for flawless samadhi. Therefore, one should carefully examine it with meticulous wisdom, based on experience, as stated in the Stages of Meditation, and recognize it. The method for generating awareness of sinking and excitement: It is not enough to merely understand sinking and excitement. During meditation, it is necessary to be able to generate awareness that knows exactly whether sinking and excitement have arisen or not. Moreover, by gradually generating strong awareness, not to mention the awareness that can recognize sinking and excitement the moment they arise, it is necessary to generate awareness of vigilance even when they have not actually arisen but are just about to arise. As it says in the latter two of the Stages of Meditation: "If you see the mind sinking or suspect it is sinking," and "See the mind is agitated or suspect it is agitated." If such awareness has not arisen, even if you determine that there is no sinking or excitement and that the meditation is flawless from here to there, you will not progress, because even if sinking and excitement arise, you will not be able to ascertain it, because strong awareness has not arisen. As it says in the Differentiation of the Middle and Extremes: "Awareness of sinking and excitement," because it is said that awareness is needed to be aware of sinking and excitement. Thus, if awareness that makes it impossible not to know when sinking and excitement arise has not arisen, then even if you meditate for a long time, you will not notice when sinking and excitement arise, and you will waste time with subtle sinking and excitement. If you wonder how to generate such awareness, then the method of cultivating mindfulness that was previously taught is one of the most important causes. In this way, if you can generate continuous mindfulness, you can prevent forgetting the object of focus and becoming distracted, thus preventing the situation where you do not notice sinking and excitement for a long time. Therefore, it is easy to be aware of sinking and excitement. If you compare the length of time it takes to recognize sinking and excitement when mindfulness is impaired and when mindfulness is not impaired, it will be very clear. Considering this, the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior also says: "When mindfulness, from the gate of the mind, turns to the meaning of guarding, then awareness will arise," and the Commentary on the Differentiation of the Middle and Extremes also says: "Awareness is mindfulness that has not forgotten."
