This should last for an hour, or half a mel-tse, or one thun, or as long as possible. It is said that this seems to have been said on the occasion of the duration of the thun when practicing vipassanā after śamatha has been accomplished. However, it seems to be the same when initially practicing śamatha, so it should be done that way. That is to say, as mentioned before, if the way of cultivating mindfulness and awareness is to alternate between mindfulness of the object and vigilance of observation, even if the thun is a little long, it will not be a problem. However, for most beginners, if the thun is too long, either forgetfulness will arise and they will become distracted, and at that time, whether sinking or excitement arises, they will only be able to recognize it after a long time, or even if they do not forget mindfulness, they will easily be influenced by sinking and excitement, and it seems that they will not be able to quickly recognize the sinking and excitement that has arisen. Of these two situations, the former will hinder the powerful arising of mindfulness, and the latter will hinder the powerful arising of awareness, so it will become very difficult to cut off sinking and excitement. In particular, forgetting the object and becoming distracted, and not being able to recognize sinking and excitement, is much worse than not being able to quickly recognize sinking and excitement while not forgetting the object. Therefore, the antidote to prevent distraction and the weakening of mindfulness, the way of cultivating mindfulness as mentioned before, is very important. If the forgetfulness of distraction is great and the power of awareness to quickly recognize sinking and excitement is small, then a short thun is needed. If it is difficult to generate forgetfulness and it seems that sinking and excitement can be quickly recognized, then even if the thun is a little long, there is no problem. Considering this, the duration of one hour, etc., is not specified. In short, because it must be determined according to one's own mental capacity, it is said that it should be as long as possible. Furthermore, if there is no sudden harm to body and mind, maintain equanimity. If it occurs, do not force yourself to practice, but stop immediately, eliminate the obstacles of the elements, and then practice. This is the view of the wise. Therefore, doing so should also be understood as a component of how long to practice the thun. Third, regarding what to do after focusing on the object, there are two parts: what to do when sinking and excitement arise, and

How to deal with agitation and lethargy. First, there are two: 1. Relying on antidotes when not recognizing agitation and lethargy; 2. Relying on antidotes when recognizing them but not striving to abandon them. The first has two parts: 1. Determining the nature of agitation and lethargy; 2. Methods for generating awareness to recognize them during meditation. First, agitation. The Compendium of Abhidharma states: What is agitation? It is the mind that is not pacified, following attractive appearances, belonging to the category of desire, and has the function of interrupting tranquility. As it is said. This has three aspects: The object is a pleasing and attractive object. The aspect is that the mind is not pacified and scatters outward, being a part of desire, it engages with the aspect of craving for objects. The function is to obstruct the mind from abiding on the object. When the mind is directed inward to the object, due to attachment to forms, sounds, etc., the mind is involuntarily drawn to those objects and becomes distracted. As it is said in the Confession Praise: How much one focuses on tranquility, again and again fixing the mind on it, then from that, the net of afflictions is involuntarily pulled by the rope of attachment to objects. As it is said. Then, is it agitation when the mind is scattered outward from the object through other afflictions, and similarly, when scattered to other virtuous objects? Agitation is a part of desire, therefore scattering through other afflictions is not agitation, but is the scattering mind, which is one of the twenty secondary afflictions. Scattering to virtuous objects is turning to virtuous mind and various mental factors, therefore not all scattering is agitation. Lethargy, in many translations, is also translated as "drooping," which is not the same as the drooping of death. Regarding its nature, most meditators in the snowy mountains seem to think that a dull mind that does not scatter to other objects and lacks clarity and awareness is lethargy. This is not reasonable, because dullness is said to be the cause of lethargy, therefore the two are different. The Middle Stages of Meditation states: If one is overwhelmed by dullness and sleep, and sees that the mind is lethargic or suspects lethargy,
