Is to realize sinking and excitement. It is called mindfulness being closely present, and one will become endowed with vigilance. Therefore, it is said, "If mindfulness is not forgotten." Thus it is said. One cause is the unique way of cultivating vigilance, which is to focus the mind on the aspect of grasping deities, etc., or to focus on the aspect of grasping experiences such as just being aware, just being clear, etc., and as previously explained, while relying on mindfulness, to carefully monitor whether or not it wanders to other things, and thus to hold the mind. This is to grasp the key point of cultivating vigilance. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: The state of body and mind, Should be examined again and again, That alone, in short, Is the characteristic of guarding vigilance. As it is said. Therefore, this (vigilance) gives rise to the vigilance of awareness from the preparation for the arising of sinking and excitement, and the way of relying on mindfulness is to prevent the forgetfulness of wandering away, so it is necessary to have a good distinction of the object. If it is not like that, but all those minds are mixed together, without the understanding of distinguishing the object, and cultivated as they are cultivated nowadays, then the result, samadhi, achieved by a confused cause, is also feared to be like that. Therefore, it is very important to rely on a great and reliable treatise, to study with extremely detailed analysis, and to determine it through practice. Do not rely solely on perseverance, as it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: Striving alone is the end of exhaustion, If guided by the friend of wisdom, great meaning is accomplished. Therefore, it is said. Secondly, to rely on the antidote of not striving to abandon it even though it is recognized. As previously explained, by cultivating mindfulness and vigilance well, mindfulness and vigilance that are extremely powerful and endowed with strength are born, so even extremely subtle sinking and excitement can be recognized by vigilance. Even though there is no fault of not recognizing the arising of sinking and excitement, not making the effort to prevent them as soon as they arise, but accepting the non-effort or non-action, is a very great fault of samadhi. If that is done, the mind will be indulged, and therefore it will be extremely difficult to generate samadhi that is free from sinking and excitement. Therefore, sinking and excitement aris

One should cultivate the mind that is called effort or diligence, which is the antidote to abandoning distraction. This has two aspects: first, how to recognize the mind and prevent dullness and excitement, and second, how to recognize the causes that give rise to dullness and excitement. The first aspect, according to the Compendium of Topics: "What is mind? Mind is manifest engagement, the function of the mind, the agent that causes the mind to engage in virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral things." This should be understood as it is said. For example, just as iron moves involuntarily under the influence of a magnet, the mind is the mental factor that moves and impels the mind in any of the three: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Therefore, here it refers to seizing the mind that manifests engagement in order to abandon dullness or excitement when either arises. So, how does one abandon dullness and excitement by manifesting engagement? In this case, dullness of mind is when one is too withdrawn inward and loses one's grasp of the object. Therefore, one should bring to mind an object of joy that causes the mind to radiate outward, such as the extremely beautiful body of the Buddha, but not joy that gives rise to afflictions. Alternatively, one should bring to mind the sign of light, such as sunlight, and when the dullness is dispelled, one should immediately firmly grasp the object of focus. As the First Step of Meditation says: "If at any time one is overcome by dullness and sleep, and one's grasp of the object is unclear and the mind becomes dull, then one should cultivate the perception of light, or bring to mind the qualities of an extremely pleasing object, such as the Buddha, and dispel the dullness, and then hold firmly to that object." Thus it is. One should not cultivate an object of aversion, because aversion is a cause of drawing the mind inward. By examining and elaborating on the object that one wishes to investigate with discriminating wisdom, dullness can also be reversed. The Condensed Perfection of Wisdom says: "By the power of the effort of higher vision, if it has become inferior, then praise it." Thus it is said. Therefore, dullness or inferiority refers to dullness caused by a decline in the strength of grasping the object, and inferiority caused by being too withdrawn inward. Therefore, the grasping power
