There is no clarity without dullness! Because it is extremely difficult to grasp the boundary of moderate tightness and looseness, which does not fall into either excessive tightness or excessive looseness. Considering the difficulty of generating samadhi that is free from sinking and excitement, the teacher Chandragomin said: "If diligence is cultivated, excitement will arise; if it is abandoned, then depression will arise. In this reasoning, it is difficult to find equal integration, so what is the use of disturbing my mind?" He said that cultivating diligence is being too tense, and if you do that, excitement will arise. If you abandon that tension and relax too much, the appearance of depression will arise in the mind. Therefore, it is difficult to find a mind that is free from sinking and excitement and dwells equally, integrating equally into reason. That is the meaning. Likewise, in its commentary by Shantarakshita, it says: "Diligence here refers to entering with joy and tension towards the side of virtue." And, "Having seen the fault of becoming excitement, if you abandon that diligence and give up effort, then the mind will become depressed." he said. Also, in the Confession Praise, it says: "If you enter with effort, excitement will arise; if you relax it, then depression will arise. It is also difficult to achieve the middle way in this, so what is the use of disturbing my mind?" he said. And in its commentary, it also says: "If you enter and strive with great effort and tension, then the mind will become excited and distracted, so by subduing it, you cannot find peace of mind even from striving. Thus, since that itself is a fault, in order to dispel it, if you relax the mind that enters with effort and give up striving, then due to faults such as forgetting the object of focus, depression and sinking will arise and occur in the mind." he said clearly. Therefore, it is said that it is extremely difficult to obtain the samadhi of the middle way practice that is free from the two extremes of sinking and excitement, or the equal integration into reason. If it is enough to just relax extremely, then there is no difficulty, and it is said that sinking arises from that. Therefore, it is clear that it is unreasonable to practice samadhi in that way. It is not enough to have just the clarity of a very relaxed mind, but you need a tight part of the holding method. Arya Asanga said, 'To apply the mind to it and to apply it correctly.'

is the mental application of focusing and engaging. It is taught in this way in the context of the first two of the nine ways of abiding in the mind. Also, in the first stage of meditation, it says: "Eliminate dullness and firmly grasp that object." And in the middle stage of meditation, it says: "Then, having pacified dullness, one should strive to ensure that the mind sees that object very clearly." It is said that seeing clearly with the mind does not merely refer to the clarity of the object, but rather to the mind's way of grasping, which is very clear and firm. This way of relying on mindfulness is extremely important. If this is not understood, then as a sign of cultivation, the more one meditates, the more forgetfulness increases, and the wisdom that distinguishes dharmas becomes dull, and so on. There seem to be many faults, but one seems to boast of having stable samadhi. As previously explained, when mindfulness binds the mind to the object, one might wonder whether it is permissible to generate the thought of observing whether the mind is grasping the object well or not. This is what needs to be done. As it says in the middle stage of meditation: "Thus, having placed the mind on the desired object, one should repeatedly and continuously place the mind on it. Having placed it near, one should examine the mind in this way: Is the mind grasping the object well, or is it dull, or is it distracted by the appearance of external objects?" Because it is taught in this way. This is also not to abandon samadhi and look in that way, but rather, while remaining in the state of samadhi, one merely observes whether the root object remains as it was previously placed, and if it does not remain, then one observes whether it has gone into dullness or agitation. That is, after placing it in samadhi, one observes intermittently, neither for too short a time nor for too long a time. When this is done before the force and intensity of the previous mind are exhausted, the force of that mind will arise, and there is a need to quickly realize dullness and agitation, so that one can abide in a state of intensity for a long time. Similarly, intermittently remembering the previous object and cultivating it is also necessary for mindfulness to become strong and continuously engaged, which is the way to cultivate mindfulness. As it says in the Hearer's Ground: "Here,
