Q: What is the one-pointedness of mind? A: It is the stream of mind that is in accordance with repeated recollection, has continuity, is without fault, and is full of joy. This is also called samadhi, and also called the one-pointedness of virtuous mind. Then, what makes one repeatedly recollect? A: It is by relying on those dharmas that have been upheld and listened to, and the instructions and teachings received from the lamas, that the characteristics of the object of calm abiding are made manifest. One should follow and focus on that object with continuous mindfulness. As it says in the commentary on the Madhyāntavibhāga: "Mindfulness is not forgetting the object." This means that the instruction to keep the mind in place is the same as saying to express the object with the mind. Therefore, cultivating mindfulness is to prevent forgetfulness that distracts the mind from the object, so the object that prevents forgetting is to express the object with the mind, that is, to repeatedly bring the object to mind. For example, if one is afraid of forgetting some knowledge, it is difficult to forget if one repeatedly remembers it in the mind. Therefore, remembering the object intermittently is necessary for generating strong mindfulness. And to keep the mind from being distracted from the object, holding on tightly and watching over it is the way to make the awareness that discerns dullness and agitation powerful. If one thinks that such a state is also conceptual thought and prevents it, one should know that it is very difficult for mindfulness and awareness to arise with strength. Third, showing the measure of the session: Then, how long should one keep the mind attached to the object with mindfulness? Is there a definite measure for the session? To this, all the previous lamas of the various Tibetan traditions say that the sessions should be short and the number should be many. The reason for this is that some say that if one does short sessions of meditation and takes good breaks, one will be happy to meditate again, but if the sessions are long, one will become bored. Others think that long sessions make it easy to be influenced by dullness and agitation, and it is difficult to generate flawless samadhi. Although the measure of the session is not clearly defined in the large treatises such as the Yogācārabhūmi, in the last stage of the Bhāvanākrama, such a sequence
