The way of mindfulness is: When others ask questions and you contemplate them, remember that the object of focus is like this. This does not merely mean being able to remember what the lama has taught, but rather that after the mind is placed on the object, it can be continuously remembered without the slightest distraction. If distracted, mindfulness is lost as soon as it occurs. Therefore, once the mind has been placed on the object as before, generate the thought, "I have focused on the object in this way." Then, without newly contemplating, maintain the continuity of that very mind without interruption. This is the crucial point of cultivating mindfulness. The difference in function is: to prevent the mind from wandering from the object to other things. Disciplining the mind by focusing it on the object in this way is explained with the example of taming an elephant. For example, it is good to tie an unruly elephant with many very strong ropes to a very stable tree or pillar, and then train it like an elephant trainer. If not, just as taming is done by repeatedly striking and punishing with sharp iron hooks. This mind, which is like an untamed elephant, should also be tied with the rope of mindfulness to the stable pillar of the object mentioned earlier. If it cannot be made to stay there, it should be pricked with the iron hook of awareness, and gradually brought under control. The Madhyamaka-hrdaya says: "The elephant of the mind is difficult to tame, A stable pillar of focus is placed before it, The rope of mindfulness tightly binds it, The hook of wisdom gradually subdues it." The Middle Stages of Meditation also says: The elephant of the mind should be tied to the tree of the object itself with the rope of mindfulness and awareness. The former quote says that awareness is like an iron hook, and the latter quote says that it is like a rope, but this is not contradictory. Because mindfulness is the direct factor in continuously attaching the mind to the object, and awareness also indirectly causes the mind to focus on the object. Because relying on awareness to recognize sinking and excitement, or the sinking and excitement that are occurring, thereby not allowing the mind to be controlled by them, but rather abiding on the fundamental object. As quoted earlier, Master Vasubandhu also said: Both mindfulness and awareness are factors that bring the mind close to the object. It is said in the scriptures that samadhi is achieved through reliance on mindfulness, and mindfulness, like a rope, directly focuses the mind on the object.

Therefore, since it is said that it is used regularly, the main method of cultivating samadhi is the cultivation of mindfulness. Mindfulness is also a way of holding that has certainty. Therefore, when cultivating samadhi, if there is no firm holding of certainty, and one just dwells blankly, although there will be clarity of mind, the clarity that comes from the power of certainty will not arise, and therefore powerful mindfulness will not arise. Therefore, even subtle sinking cannot be overcome, and it will only become a flawed samadhi. Without setting up other objects of focus such as deity images, just cultivating the non-conceptual mind, one should also let the mind dwell without conceptualizing anything on any object. Remembering the instruction, "Do not let the mind wander, do not be distracted," after that, one must not let the mind wander. Not being distracted is also the same meaning as mindfulness of not forgetting the object of focus, so it does not go beyond the method of cultivating mindfulness. Therefore, that kind of practice also needs to rely on the mindfulness that produces the power of certainty. Regarding eliminating the flawed sectarianism, there are the following wrong discriminations that need to be eliminated: As mentioned before, praising the awareness of letting go, and striving to dwell without conceptualizing, although there is not the slightest fault of sinking, but because the component of agitation is too large, seeing that it is impossible to continue to abide, also degrading the power of awareness, and also relaxing the effort, seeing that abiding arises quickly, then convinced that that method is a great instruction, it seems to proclaim loudly that relaxation is the best practice. This is a statement that does not distinguish between the arising of sinking and the arising of practice. Because like this flawless samadhi, it needs to have two characteristics as mentioned before, it is not enough to just have the mind's non-conceptual abiding stable. If in that kind of situation, there is a turbidity of mind that has become confused, even if that is sinking, but because there is no such situation, there is clarity of mind, then one thinks that it is a flawless samadhi, that seems to be a statement that does not distinguish between dullness and sinking, these will be explained in detail below. Therefore, if one strives too hard and makes the awareness full of power, although there is clarity, it is difficult to generate abiding because the component of agitation is too large; if one cultivates too relaxed, although there is abiding, it is impossible to obtain power because the component of sinking is too large.
