Therefore, one should make the self-existing nature manifest clearly. First, when seeking a support for the mind to focus on, one should look for a very fine image of the Teacher, such as a painting or a cast statue, and look at it repeatedly, grasping its characteristics, and accustom the mind to visualize it. Alternatively, one should contemplate the meaning of the excellent instructions given by the lama, make it appear in the mind, and then seek a support. The support should not appear as a painting or a cast statue, but one should train to make it appear as the actual Buddha. Some people place an image in front of them and meditate by staring at it with their eyes. This is forbidden by the master Yeshe De, which is very good, because it is not cultivating the consciousness of samadhi, but cultivating the consciousness of the mind. The actual object of samadhi is the actual object of the consciousness of the mind, so one must focus the mind on that. As mentioned earlier, one must focus on the general meaning or the appearance of the image of the actual object. Regarding the coarse and subtle parts of the image, it is also said elsewhere that one should first focus on the coarse parts, and when that is stable, then focus on the subtle parts. From experience, the coarse parts are easier to visualize, so one must use the coarse details of the image as the support. What is particularly important is that until one has achieved a samadhi that is like the one described, one should not switch to many different types of objects to practice samadhi, because if one constantly switches to many different objects to meditate on samadhi, it will become a great obstacle to achieving tranquility. Therefore, in the qualified texts on cultivating samadhi, such as the Stages of Meditation and the three Gradual Paths, it is said that when first cultivating samadhi, one should focus on only one object and practice, and it is not said to switch to many objects. The noble Pawo also clearly said: In the way of stabilizing on one object, one should stabilize the mind's thought. From passing through many objects, the mind will become confused with afflictions. This is said in the context of practicing meditation. The Lamp for the Path also says: On any one object, one should place the mind on virtue. The word "one" is a definitive term.

Thus it was said. Therefore, first, having focused on a single object of focus and attained calm abiding, later one can also focus on many objects. As it says in the First Stage of Meditation: "When the mind is made to be firm in its attention, then one should only focus extensively on the distinctions of the aggregates and elements, etc." As it also says in the Explanatory of the Thought, etc.: "Yogis have taught many aspects of focus with distinctions such as focusing on the eighteen emptinesses." Thus it was said. Thus, the standard for initially finding the object of focus on which the mind is held is: the head, the two hands, the other parts of the body, and the two feet, visualizing them clearly several times in sequence, and then, when the entire body is brought to mind, if about half of the gross limbs can appear in the mind, even if a clear appearance with light does not arise, one should be satisfied with just that much and hold the mind on that. The reason for this is as follows: If one is not satisfied with just that much and does not hold the mind, but desires an even clearer appearance and repeatedly clarifies it, then the object of focus will become slightly clearer, but not only will one not attain the samadhi of mental stability, but it will also become an obstacle to attaining it. If the object of focus is not very clear, but one holds the mind on that same half-clear object of focus, one will quickly attain samadhi, and then, by increasing the clarity, the clarity will be easily achieved. This comes from the instructions of the teacher Yeshe De, and it seems very important. Although there seems to be a classification of four sets of two regarding the way objects of focus appear, there is no certainty because the ease or difficulty of appearance varies depending on the type of person, and even when they appear, there are clear and unclear appearances, and even those two are of various kinds, such as stable and unstable. If it is a time to practice the deity yoga of secret mantra, then one must definitely cultivate the clear form of the deity, so until it arises, one must use various methods to generate it. But here, if the form of the deity is very difficult to appear, then focusing on any one of the previously shown objects of focus holding the mind is sufficient. Because the main purpose is to achieve just the samadhi of calm abiding. Here too, if one practices by focusing on the deity's body, even if its form does not appear, if one holds the mind, the desired result will not be achieved, so one must hold the mind on the basis of the appearance of the form.
