O! If one is accustomed to pride, then one should focus the mind on the distinctions of the elements. It is also said, if one is only accustomed to conceptual thoughts, then one should focus the mind on mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. In this way, one can focus the mind on a suitable object. This is what is said in the scriptures. Also, in the Śrāvakabhūmi, it is said: For those individuals who are heavily influenced by attachment, hatred, ignorance, pride, and conceptual thoughts, one should first purify these habits by practicing with objects that counteract these habits. After that, one will realize the abiding of the mind, and these objects will also become clear and distinct. Therefore, these individuals must diligently practice with these objects. As it is said in the scriptures, one must diligently practice with these objects. If one is of equal habituation and has few afflictions, then it is sufficient to hold the mind on whichever of the previously mentioned objects one finds pleasing. It is not necessary to be definitive, because in the Śrāvakabhūmi it says: For those with equal habituation, one should strive for whatever one finds pleasing for the sake of temporary abiding of the mind, but not for the sake of purifying habits. Just as equal habituation is, so too should one understand those with few afflictions. This is what is said. Among these, those with strong tendencies towards the five poisons, such as attachment, are those who in previous lives have always cultivated and become accustomed to the five poisons, and have done so repeatedly. Therefore, even towards small objects of the five poisons, strong and lasting five poisons arise. Those who practice equally are those who in previous lives have not always cultivated or become accustomed to attachment and so on, nor have they done so repeatedly, but they have also not regarded them as faults or rejected them. Therefore, although strong and lasting attachment and so on do not arise towards their objects, it is not that the five poisons such as attachment do not arise at all. Those with few afflictions are those who in other lives have not cultivated attachment and so on, and have regarded them as faults and rejected them. Therefore, towards large, numerous, and excessive objects of attachment and so on, attachment and so on arise slowly, but towards medium and small objects, they do not arise at all. Therefore, those with strong tendencies towards the five poisons, such as attachment, take a long time [to subside]; those with equal practice do not take too long; and those with few afflictions subside quickly.

Then one will realize that the mind has settled. Furthermore, who strives with the object of mastery? As asked by Nāgamitra. Nāgamitra! If a bhikkhu yogi, a practitioner of yoga, is completely ignorant of the self-characteristics of all phenomena, or completely ignorant of the nature of self, sentient beings, life, birth-giver, nourisher, and person, then he should focus his mind on the skillful aggregates. If he is completely ignorant of the cause, then he should focus on the skillful realms. If he is completely ignorant of the condition, then he should focus on the skillful sources. If he is completely ignorant of impermanence, suffering, and selflessness, then he should focus on the skillful dependent origination, and on what is and is not the place. As it is said, these five objects mainly dispel ignorance. Furthermore, who focuses the mind on the object of purifying afflictions? The sutra says: If one wishes to be separated from desire in the desire realm, then one should focus on the coarse nature of desires and the peaceful nature of forms. If one wishes to be separated from desire from forms, then one should focus on the coarse nature of forms and the peaceful nature of formless realms. If one wishes to be disgusted with all aggregates of destruction and wishes to be liberated, then one should focus on the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. So it is said. These objects can be used as objects for both analytical meditation with higher vision and settling meditation with calm abiding, so they are not just objects for calm abiding. However, some can be used as objects for newly cultivating calm abiding, and some can be used as objects for making calm abiding, which has already been achieved, special, so they are explained in the context of calm abiding objects. Showing the different names of the object: The basis on which the mind is held, the object of samadhi, the image or appearance of the aforementioned objects appearing in the mind, the different names of that name, as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi: That image is also called image, also called the sign of samadhi, and the object of the realm of samadhi, and
