It is to hold the mind on what appears in the mind. Taking loving-kindness as the object, focusing on the three—friends, enemies, and neutrals—remaining in equanimity, and generating the thought of accomplishing benefit and happiness is loving-kindness. By the manner of holding loving-kindness, holding the mind on those objects is called focusing on loving-kindness, which means both the object and the subject are called loving-kindness. Focusing on dependent origination means relying solely on the phenomena of dependent origination arising in the three times, and only the result of the phenomena arises. Other than that, there is no agent or experiencer of the result. Thus, focusing on that meaning and holding the mind. Focusing on the distinction of elements means separately distinguishing the parts of the six elements—earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness—and holding the mind by focusing on them. Focusing on breathing in and out means focusing on the breath going in and out by counting and observing, so that the mind does not wander elsewhere. The objects of the wise are also five: being skilled in the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination, and what is and is not. Among them, the aggregates are the five aggregates, such as the form aggregate. Being skilled in them means knowing that there is no self or what belongs to self apart from the aggregates. The elements are the eighteen elements, such as the eye. Being skilled in them means knowing the causal conditions of those elements arising from their respective seeds. The sources are the twelve sources, such as the eye. Being skilled in them means knowing that the six internal sources are the causal conditions of the six consciousnesses, the six external sources are the causal conditions of the objects, and the immediately ceased mind is the immediately preceding condition. Dependent origination is the twelve links. Being skilled in it means knowing that they are impermanent, suffering, and without self. What is and is not means that the maturation of virtue is a pleasant result, which is what is; the maturation of non-virtue is a pleasant result, which is not what is, and so on. Being skilled in them means knowing it as such. This is a distinction of being skilled in dependent origination, the difference being that it enables one to know dissimilar causes. When these are taken as objects of calm abiding, it means holding the mind by a single manner of holding that is definite in any of those, such as the aggregates. Afflictions

As for practicing, it is merely to weaken the seeds of afflictions, and to completely abandon the seeds. The first object of focus is: the coarse of the lower realms and the peaceful of the higher realms, from the desire realm to the realm of nothingness. The second object of focus is: the sixteen aspects such as impermanence of the four truths. These also When practicing calm abiding, one does not discriminate, but simply holds the mind in whatever way one is certain of the appearance of these objects. In the Middle Stages of Meditation, three objects of focus are taught: to gather all twelve parts of the scriptures into Suchness and abide in it; and to focus on the aggregates, etc., which summarize the dharmas, and to focus on the image of the Buddha seen and heard. The way to focus on the aggregates, etc., is: first to know that all conditioned phenomena can be summarized into the five aggregates, and then to gradually summarize them into them, and to hold the mind by focusing on them. Just as one becomes accustomed to distinguishing, one will generate discriminating wisdom, so if one becomes accustomed to summarizing, one will not be distracted to other objects, and thus generate the samadhi of focusing the mind on the object. This is the oral instruction of Abhidharma. Similarly, one should know that all dharmas can be summarized into realms and sources, and hold the mind by summarizing them into them. Among them, the objects of focus for purifying the aspects are: as explained before, for the aspects that especially counteract afflictions such as attachment, attachment and other afflictions are easily stopped, and it is easy to attain samadhi by relying on it, so it is a special object of focus. The objects of focus for the wise are: by preventing the self of the person other than these dharmas, it is in accordance with the arising of insight that realizes no-self, so it is a very good object of focus for calm abiding. And the objects of focus for taming afflictions are: because it can become the antidote to all afflictions, it is of great significance. The pervasive object of focus is: it is not separate from the previous objects of focus. Therefore, one must rely on the calm abiding object of focus that has special necessity to accomplish samadhi. Therefore, those who accomplish samadhi by using pebbles and pieces of wood, etc., as objects of focus are not the correct establishment of the object of focus for samadhi.
