That is necessary. To generate it, one needs a strong and constant desire to pursue samadhi. The reason for this is the need for firm faith that delights the mind by seeing the merits of samadhi, so one must first repeatedly meditate on the faith of thinking about the merits of samadhi. If one observes these sequences through practice, it will become very clear, so keep the key points in mind. The Madhyāntavibhāga says: "The place and abiding therein, the cause and the effect itself." Here, the place is desire, which is the place of effort. Abiding is effort or diligence. The cause of desire is faith that trusts in merit. The result of effort is extreme suppleness. Here, the merits of samadhi to be cultivated are: if śamatha-vipassanā is accomplished, joy in the mind and happiness in the body increase, so one can abide in happiness in this life; because one obtains extreme suppleness of body and mind, the mind can be used at will on any virtuous object; because there is no involuntary distraction to inverted objects, evil deeds will not occur, and whatever good deeds are done will be powerful; relying on śamatha-vipassanā, one can accomplish the merits of clairvoyance and magical powers; especially relying on it, the realization of vipassanā that realizes things as they are arises, so one can quickly cut off the root of samsara, etc. Whatever merits one thinks of, one will increase the enthusiasm for cultivating samadhi, know these and practice them. If this arises, the mind will constantly urge the cultivation of samadhi, so it is easy to obtain samadhi, and even if one has already obtained it, one will repeatedly cultivate it, so it is difficult to lose. Secondly, there are two aspects: identifying the object of focus, which is the basis on which the mind rests, and the manner in which the mind is directed towards it. Firstly, there are two aspects: establishing the object of focus in general, and identifying the object of focus that is relevant to the occasion. Firstly, there are three aspects: directly indicating the object of focus, indicating who should focus on what, and indicating the types of object of focus. The first is: the Blessed One spoke of four objects of focus for yogis, namely: such pervasive objects of focus, objects of focus for practicing purification, objects of focus for the wise, and objects of focus for purifying afflictions.

the object of. There are four kinds of pervasive objects: images with conceptualization, images without conceptualization, the limits of things, and the complete accomplishment of needs. Among them, what is established from the perspective of the objectifying agent is two images: the first is the object of insight, and the second is the object of calm abiding. An image is when the self-characterizing object of what is being focused on is not real, but its appearance appears in the mind. When one contemplates it, there is conceptualization of contemplation, so it is an image with conceptualization. Also, when one focuses on it and does not contemplate it, but places the mind, it is called an image without conceptualization because there is no contemplation of contemplation. So, what object is that image an image of? It is an image or aspect of the five objects of practice and purification, the five objects of the wise, and the two objects of purifying afflictions. What is established from the perspective of the object to be focused on is the limit of things, that is, the limit of all things as many as there are, saying, "This is all there is, and there is nothing else besides this," and the limit of things as they are, saying, "It exists only in this way, and does not exist in any other way." Among them, as many as there are includes all conditioned phenomena gathered in the five aggregates, and all phenomena gathered in the eighteen elements and twelve sources, and all knowable things gathered in the four truths, and there is nothing else beyond that. As it is, it is the meaning of the reality and suchness of those objects, established by reasoning. What is established from the perspective of the result is the complete accomplishment of needs, that is, by relying on and familiarizing oneself with the mental activity of focusing on the images of those objects with calm abiding and insight, and by repeatedly practicing it, one is separated from one's own bad states and transformed into another state. Practice and purification is the object of purifying what is mostly practiced with desire and so on, that is, the five: ugliness, love, dependent arising, division of elements, and breathing in and out. Among them, focusing on the object of ugliness is that the thirty-six such as hair and body hair are internal ugliness, and discoloration and so on are external ugliness, that is, the aspect of unclean ugliness.
