The body will not feel very tired, and this behavior is different from that of outsiders and external debaters, and others will be very happy to see this behavior. This behavior is permitted and followed by the Buddha and the Buddha's Shravaka disciples. After seeing these five reasons, (the Buddha) said to sit in the lotus position. Keeping the body upright is to avoid drowsiness and sleep. Therefore, first, one must accomplish the eight behaviors of the body, especially subduing the wind, as mentioned earlier. Regarding the order of meditation, most Lamrims say that Shamatha should be practiced through the eight applications that avoid the five faults mentioned in the Madhyantavibhāga. From the instructions transmitted from Geshe Lhasorwa, it is said that on this basis, it is also necessary to practice through the six powers, four mental engagements, and nine minds mentioned in the Śrāvakabhūmi. The wise Yönten Drak summarized the method of abiding in the mind into four mental engagements, and regarded the six faults and their remedies, the eight applications, as the method of all Samādhis. Many Sutras, the Sutra Ornament, the Madhyantavibhāga, the Yogācārabhūmi of the Holy Asanga, and the three stages of Madhyamaka meditation, etc., all the methods that teach meditation say this in unison. First, by abiding in the ranks of Samādhi, by striving with these methods, Samādhi will surely be attained. Nowadays, even the names of these methods are not seen in those teachings that are known as profound meditation instructions. One's own Lamrim explains that without possessing the ranks of Samādhi and without these methods, even if one strives for a long time, Samādhi will not be accomplished. This seems to be a statement that has gained complete certainty about the methods of practicing Samādhi in the major treatises. In general, the Holy Asanga elaborated on the methods of guiding the stages of the three vehicles in the five sections of the Yogācārabhūmi, so the treatises that teach practice are very extensive. Among them, what is elaborated in one treatise is not elaborated in another, so both Shamatha and Vipassanā need to be understood from the Śrāvakabhūmi in the chapter on Determination and Synthesis, so the Śrāvakabhūmi is very important.

It is so. The venerable Maitreya also spoke of the nine methods of abiding the mind and the eight mental activities of abandonment in the Ornament of the Sutras and the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Following these, the Indian scholars such as Master Simhabhadra, Kamalashila, and Shantipa also made many stages of cultivating samadhi. Except for the different objects of focus on deity bodies, bindus, and letters, the general framework of samadhi is very consistent with what is said in the previous great treatises and tantras. In particular, the faults of samadhi, such as the five faults, and the methods of how to eliminate these faults, seem very detailed in the sutra aspect. However, those who can practice from the great treatises are as rare as stars in the daytime. They attribute the stains of their own intelligence to these treatises, thinking that these treatises are only to expand external knowledge, and that the essential meaning of the pith instructions exists separately. Therefore, when practicing the stages of cultivating samadhi mentioned in these treatises, it seems that there will be no doubt as to how to practice. This pith instruction relies on the fact that all the practices of the beginning and end come from the great treatises. Therefore, here too, the methods of cultivating samadhi will be taken from the great treatises and explained. There are two aspects to this: one is the method of generating flawless samadhi; the other is the stages of generating mind abiding based on it. The first aspect has three points: first, what should be done before the mind is focused on the object; second, what should be done when focusing on the object; and third, what should be done after focusing on the object. The first point is: if one cannot prevent laziness, which is not happy to practice samadhi but likes its opposite, then one should not be allowed to enter samadhi from the beginning. Even if one obtains it once, one cannot continue it and will quickly degenerate. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent laziness at the beginning. For this, if one obtains the bliss of body and mind filled with joy, then one will be diligent in virtue day and night and will not feel tired, thus preventing laziness. To generate pliancy, one needs to continuously exert effort in the samadhi that is the cause of generating pliancy.
