It is impossible to generate the joy and ease of a mind that is extremely tamed. After attaining śamatha, even analytical meditation with discriminating wisdom can generate pliancy to its extreme. Therefore, śamatha is necessary as its cause, which will be explained below. Therefore, since analytical wisdom can generate pliancy through the power of analysis without keeping the mind on a single object, it will become vipaśyanā. Even if the object is emptiness, generating pliancy by keeping the mind on a single object does not go beyond the method of accomplishing śamatha. Therefore, it is not considered to be the attainment of vipaśyanā by that alone. In this way, if one first seeks the understanding of selflessness and then repeatedly contemplates its meaning, it is impossible to accomplish śamatha based on that since śamatha has not been accomplished beforehand. If one does not analyze but engages in settling meditation, although śamatha can be accomplished based on that, there is no method of cultivating vipaśyanā other than the method of cultivating śamatha, so one must seek vipaśyanā from outside. Therefore, one does not go beyond the sequence of first seeking śamatha and then meditating on vipaśyanā based on that. Thus, if the method of generating vipaśyanā is not done by generating pliancy through analytical meditation with discriminating wisdom, there is not even a little valid reason to first seek śamatha and then meditate on vipaśyanā based on that. It is also extremely unreasonable not to meditate in that sequence. As it is said in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, as quoted earlier, one cultivates vipaśyanā based on having attained śamatha. And "the latter arises dependent on the former," the sequence of dhyāna and prajñā of the six perfections, and the sequence of the training in higher concentration arising dependent on the training in higher wisdom, etc., are all sequences of meditating on śamatha first and then meditating on vipaśyanā later. As it is said in the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* quoted earlier, and it is also said in the *Śrāvakabhūmi* that one cultivates vipaśyanā based on śamatha. The *Madhyamakahrdaya*, the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*, the three *Stages of Meditation*, Yeshe Drakpa, and Śāntipa all say that one first seeks śamatha and then cultivates vipaśyanā. Therefore, some Indian teachers hold that one does not seek śamatha separately, but generates vipaśyanā from the beginning through analysis with discriminating wisdom. This is contrary to the treatises of the great chariot

I object, those with wisdom should not trust. Regarding the order of tranquility and insight, it is done that way when newly generated at first, but later one also cultivates tranquility after cultivating insight first, so the order is not fixed. Then, in the Compendium of Determinations it says: Some have attained insight, but have not attained tranquility, they rely on insight and strive for tranquility. What does this mean? This does not mean that they have not attained the tranquility included in the preliminary concentration of the first dhyana, but that they have not attained the tranquility beyond the actual first dhyana. That is, after realizing the four truths directly, they rely on that to accomplish the tranquility beyond the first dhyana. In the Basis of the Earth it says: Furthermore, from suffering to the path, knowing exactly as it is, one has not attained the first dhyana and so on. Immediately after sitting down, one settles the mind and does not discriminate the Dharma. He relies on that superior wisdom to combine with the superior mind. That is why. In general, in order to simplify terminology, the nine states of mind are called tranquility, and the four discriminations etc. are called insight. But the actual tranquility and insight, as will be explained, must be established after physical pliancy has arisen. There are three ways to learn each: how to learn tranquility, how to learn insight, and how to combine the two. The first has three: relying on the conditions for tranquility, how to cultivate tranquility based on that, and the extent to which tranquility is achieved through cultivation. First, the yogi should first rely on the conditions for tranquility, which are the cause of achieving tranquility easily and quickly. There are six of these: dwelling in a suitable place, which is a place with five qualities: it is easy to obtain food, clothing, etc., so it is easy to obtain; there are no untamed people such as wild animals and enemies, so it is a good dwelling; it is a land that does not cause disease, so it is a good land; it has friends with the same discipline and view, so it is a good friend; there are not many people during the day and the sound is small at night, so it is a very good place. Also in the Ornament of the Sutras it says: Where the wise cultivate
