Unseen, because the aspect of concentration is greater and wisdom is less. Bodhisattvas do see, but it is not clear, because the aspect of wisdom is greater and concentration is less. The Tathagata sees all, because he possesses both calm abiding and insight equally. Thus he taught: By the power of calm abiding, like a lamp placed in a windless place, the winds of conceptual thought will not cause the mind to waver. By the power of insight, having abandoned all nets of wrong views, others cannot refute it. As it is said in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: As it is said: By the power of calm abiding, it becomes unmoving. By the power of insight, it becomes like a mountain. Like that. Therefore, the mind not being distracted from its object, remaining steadily in its object, is the effect of calm abiding. Realizing the suchness of selflessness, and thereby abandoning wrong views such as the view of self, being like a mountain that cannot be moved by the opponent, is the effect of insight, therefore these should be distinguished separately. Before calm abiding is accomplished, even if one analyzes the meaning of selflessness with discriminating wisdom, like a lamp in the wind, the mind is very agitated, and even the general meaning of selflessness does not appear clearly. When calm abiding is accomplished, analyzing at that time avoids the fault of excessive agitation, and thus the general meaning of selflessness appears clearly, therefore the aspect of the mind of insight that does not move arises from non-conceptual calm abiding. However, the aspect of realizing the way things are does not arise from calm abiding, for example, the aspect that makes the shape of a lamp appear clearly arises from the wick and the previous fire, not from a wind-protecting screen etc., but the steady aspect of the lamp not moving arises from the screen etc. Like that, if one investigates with the wisdom possessed of the equipoise of calm abiding that is undisturbed by sinking and excitement, one will come to know the correct meaning, considering this, in the Compendium of True Dharma it is said: If the mind is placed in equipoise, one will know reality as it is. Thus it is said. In the First Stage of Meditation it says: Because the mind wavers like water, it cannot abide without the basis of calm abiding, and a mind that is not placed in equipoise cannot know reality as it is.

cannot be known, and the Blessed One also abides in it, knowing it thoroughly as it is. Thus it is said. If calm abiding is accomplished, not only can it eliminate the fault of the movement of wisdom that properly examines selflessness, but also the wisdom of individual contemplation that cultivates impermanence, the results of actions, the faults of cyclic existence, loving-kindness, compassion, the mind of enlightenment, etc., can also eliminate the fault of distraction from the object of focus, and abide in their respective objects of focus without being distracted to others. Therefore, all the virtuous deeds that are done are very powerful. Before calm abiding is attained, most of the time one is distracted to other objects of focus, so all the virtuous practices that are done are weak. As it is said in the "Entering the Path of Enlightenment": "A person whose mind is distracted dwells in the fangs of afflictions." And: "Even if one practices recitation and asceticism, etc., for a long time, the wise say that what is done with a distracted mind is meaningless." Thus it is said. Therefore, the necessity of accomplishing the samadhi of non-conceptual abiding without distracting the mind to other objects of focus is to accomplish the ability to use the mind as one wishes on virtuous objects of focus. That is, the mind can stay even if it is tied to one object of focus, and if it is released, it can go as one wishes on limitless virtuous objects of focus, just like drawing water into a smooth canal. Therefore, after calm abiding is accomplished, one must cultivate the aspects of focus that gather limitless virtues such as wisdom that focuses on suchness and the extent of things, as well as the mind of generosity, the mind of discipline, patience, diligence, faith, and renunciation, and eliminate limitless faults. If one constantly ties the mind to one object of focus and abides in it, one does not understand the necessity of cultivating calm abiding, and one should know that great virtue will not arise. Thus, if one abandons the analytical meditation of individual contemplation in terms of conduct and view, the cultivation of single-pointed concentration is very ineffective. In particular, in order to generate a strong and lasting conviction in the meaning of selflessness, one must cultivate the focus on suchness by examining it with the wisdom of individual contemplation.
