Venerable, there are two teachings, namely: the ultimate of things and the complete accomplishment of benefit. This is the intended meaning. In the *Compendium of Mahayana*, the ultimate of things is divided into two: suchness and allness. As Shantipa previously stated, both shamatha and vipashyana each have both suchness and allness as their objects. Therefore, shamatha and vipashyana should not be distinguished from the perspective of their objects. There is shamatha that realizes emptiness, and there is vipashyana that does not realize emptiness. This is because the mind, having subsided from running after external objects, abides within, and is therefore called shamatha. Because it sees excellently, especially, it is called vipashyana. Some people think that the mind abiding without conceptualization, without the sharpness of clarity, is shamatha, and that with the sharpness of clarity is vipashyana, but this is not reasonable. Because the words of the Buddha and the treatises of Maitreya, as well as the treatises of Asanga and the *Stages of Meditation*, etc., extensively establish the definitions of shamatha and vipashyana, among which the samadhi of one-pointedness of mind on an object is called shamatha, and the wisdom that correctly distinguishes the meaning of knowable things is called vipashyana, which contradicts the above view. In particular, the presence or absence of the sharpness of clarity in a non-conceptual mind is the difference between dullness and alertness in samadhi, and cannot be considered a distinction between shamatha and vipashyana at all. Because all shamatha samadhis must have dullness and clarity, and all samadhis free from dullness will necessarily produce clarity of mind. Therefore, samadhi and wisdom that aim at suchness should be identified from the perspective of whether the mind has realized the two objects of selflessness of persons and selflessness of phenomena, and cannot be identified from the perspective of whether the mind abides in a state of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptualization. Because there are countless samadhis of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptualization whose minds have not turned to the reality of selflessness of persons and selflessness of phenomena. In this way, even if the view of realizing reality is not found, it is obviously sufficient to simply hold the mind without any conceptualization. Therefore, even if emptiness is not understood, there is no obstacle to the arising of non-conceptual samadhi. In this way, if the mind is controlled for a long time, one can reach the ultimate of controlling the mind.

Because the workable wind arises, and when it arises, joy and happiness arise in body and mind, this is the natural law, so the arising of happiness is not contradictory. When it arises, because of the clarity of the feeling of joy and happiness, clarity will come to the mind. Therefore, all samadhis of bliss-clarity-non-thought cannot be used as valid proof to establish that they realize suchness. Therefore, even in the samadhi that realizes emptiness, bliss-clarity-non-thought will arise, and for samadhis where the mind is not directed towards emptiness, the arising of bliss-clarity-non-thought is very common, so it is necessary to distinguish between the two. Fourth, the reason why both shamatha and vipashyana must be cultivated is: If someone thinks, why is it not enough to cultivate only shamatha or vipashyana, but both must be cultivated? It will be explained: For example, when lighting a lamp to view murals at night, if the lamp is very bright and not moved by the wind, the painted images will be seen very clearly. If the lamp is not bright enough, or if it is bright but moved by the wind, the images will not be seen clearly. Similarly, when viewing profound meanings, if one possesses the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of suchness without inversion, and the immovability of the mind abiding on the object as desired, then suchness will be seen clearly. Even if there is non-conceptual samadhi where the mind abides without scattering elsewhere, but if there is no wisdom that realizes the way things are, it is like being without the eye that sees suchness. No matter how accustomed one is to samadhi, it is impossible to realize the way things are. Even if there is a view that understands the suchness of selflessness, but if there is no stable samadhi where the mind abides one-pointedly, then one will be disturbed by the wind of wandering thoughts that move involuntarily, and it will be impossible to see the meaning of the way things are clearly. Therefore, both shamatha and vipashyana are necessary. As it says in the *Middle Stages of Meditation*: "Vipashyana alone, without shamatha, will cause the yogi's mind to wander to external objects, and it will not be stable like a lamp in the wind. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not appear very clearly. Therefore, both should be cultivated equally." Therefore, in the *Great Nirvana Sutra* of the Blessed One, it is also said: "The Shravakas the Tathagata's lineage
