Indeed. Concentrations such as single-pointedness of mind on a virtuous object are included in the aspect of calm abiding. Wisdom, which distinguishes the meaning of suchness or suchness in quantity, and virtuous dharmas are included in the aspect of insight. Considering this, it is said that all the qualities of the three vehicles are the result of calm abiding and insight, so there is no contradiction. Considering this, it is also said in the Sutra of Faith in the Great Vehicle: "Son of good family, in this way, the faith of Bodhisattvas in the Great Vehicle, whatever arises from the Great Vehicle, all of them should be known to arise from the mind without distraction, truly thinking about the meaning and the Dharma." It is said that the mind without distraction is the aspect of calm abiding, the single-pointedness of mind. Truly thinking about the meaning and the Dharma is the aspect of insight, the wisdom of distinguishing individually. Therefore, all the qualities of the two vehicles must be cultivated by examining them with the wisdom of distinguishing individually, and by practicing the two, single-pointedness of mind on the object. It is not practiced by only one aspect of placement meditation and analytical meditation. Also, in the Explanation of Intent, it is said: "If the one who is born cultivates insight and calm abiding, then he will be liberated from the bonds of bad states and the bonds of signs." It is said that the bad state is the potential of generating perverted objects again and again, the habit residing in the mind stream, and the sign is the manifestation of attachment to the perverted object, arising before and after, nourishing that habit. The former is abandoned by insight, and the latter is abandoned by calm abiding, as explained in the instructions of the Perfection of Wisdom. These are the benefits of the terms calm abiding and insight. However, even if the terms calm abiding and insight are not established, the benefits of samadhi and wisdom, which have the same meaning, should also be understood as the benefits of these two. Secondly, for example, a tree has countless branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, but the key to where they gather is the root. Similarly, all the immeasurable concentrations of the Great and Small Vehicles that have been taught are the key to where they gather, which is calm abiding and insight. In the Explanation of Intent, it is said: "I, for the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas,"

All the various samādhis that have been taught should be understood as being included within śamatha and vipaśyanā. Thus it is said. Therefore, those who seek samādhi, since they cannot exhaust the infinite distinctions of clarity, should thoroughly investigate the methods of cultivating the two, śamatha and vipaśyanā, which are the general principles of all samādhis, and always rely on them. As it says in the *Bhāvanākrama III*: Although the Blessed One has taught immeasurable and countless different samādhis of the bodhisattvas, since śamatha and vipaśyanā pervade all samādhis, the path of uniting śamatha and vipaśyanā should be explained. And as it says in the *Bhāvanākrama II*: Since these two encompass all samādhis, all yogis should always necessarily cultivate śamatha and vipaśyanā. Thus it is said. Third, regarding the nature of śamatha. The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says: He dwells alone in a secluded place, mentally applying himself correctly inwardly, and remembering those dharmas that have been correctly considered, with the mind of remembering, continuously remembering inwardly. Having thus entered and repeatedly abiding in this, whatever arises, the pliancy of body and the pliancy of mind, is called śamatha. Therefore, the bodhisattva seeks śamatha. Thus it is said. Its meaning is that, having made any one of the meanings of the twelve branches of scripture that has been ascertained, such as the aggregates, the object of focus, without allowing the mind that focuses on that object to wander elsewhere, continuously focusing on that object with mindfulness, by thus binding it, the mind naturally abides on the object of focus, and when the joy and bliss of the pliancy of body and mind arise, that samādhi transforms into śamatha. This arises merely from inwardly holding the mind without distraction, and does not depend on understanding the reality of things. Regarding the nature of vipaśyanā, that same sūtra says: Having obtained the pliancy of body and the pliancy of mind, abiding in that, abandoning the aspects of mind, correctly considering those dharmas

Internally, one delights in individually discriminating the objects of meditative concentration as images. Thus, whatever is the discrimination and thorough discrimination, the complete understanding and complete examination, the forbearance and desire, the distinction and observation, and the conceptualization of those objects of meditative concentration images, is called insight (vipassanā). Therefore, a Bodhisattva is skilled in insight. It is said. Having seen that this sutra clearly explains the wisdom of insight's individual discrimination without any dispute, the Chinese monk Heshang said, "I don't know if this is a sutra," and then it is said that he trampled it with his feet. That is because he took all conceptualization as clinging to characteristics, abandoned the wisdom of individual discrimination, and did not focus on anything, wanting to meditate on the profound meaning, which was inconsistent with this, so he did that. It seems that there are very many who follow this system. Among them, discrimination is discriminating how many. Thorough discrimination is discriminating how it is. When the wise attention with conceptualization clings to characteristics, it is complete understanding; when it correctly understands, it is complete examination. The noble Asanga said so. Conceptualization is roughly conceptualizing, and examination is carefully examining. Clinging to characteristics is not clinging to truth, but distinguishing the subtle differences of the object. Therefore, for each of discriminating how many and how it is, there are two of complete understanding and examination. In accordance with the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, the noble Ratnamegha Sutra also clearly states, "Śamatha is one-pointedness of mind, and vipassanā is accurate individual discrimination." The venerable Maitreya also said in the Ornament of the Sutras, "The name of Dharma is also the collection of this; one should know that śamatha is the path; the path of vipassanā is those meanings; one should know that it is discriminating observation." And, "Relying on true abiding, in order to settle the mind on the mind, in order to thoroughly discriminate the Dharma, it is śamatha and vipassanā." Thus, relying on true meditative concentration, settling the mind is śamatha, and the wisdom of thoroughly discriminating the Dharma is said to be vipassanā.
