, therefore, just as it is explained in the sutra, it makes it impossible to lead the meaning of the sutra pitaka to other places. It is also said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi, for the object of the unspeakable thing itself and the meaning itself, the mind must be definitely focused, thereby being free from all elaboration, and free from all mindfulness of complete mental wandering, when faith arises in all objects, from dwelling the mind on the characteristics of inner samadhi and gathering and dwelling, to the extent that it becomes a single continuum and becomes samadhi, this is called shamatha. What is vipashyana? With the mindfulness of completely cultivating shamatha, the characteristics of the very dharmas as they were thought of are contemplated and distinguished, and extremely distinguished and the dharma is extremely distinguished, to the extent that it enters with the wise and wisdom, whatever this is, is called vipashyana. Like this, it is said in accordance with the former ones, this explains the intention of both the sutra and the venerable one as before, thereby making the recognition of the previous shamatha and vipashyana more firm. It is also said in the Madhyama-krama of the Stages of Meditation, after the distraction of external objects has subsided, dwelling in the very nature of the mind that is delighted by the continuous and natural entry into the object internally, and possessing extreme pliancy, is called shamatha. When dwelling in that very shamatha, whatever discriminative observation is made on that itself is vipashyana. And it is also said in the Prajnaparamita Upadesha, for that which has become as many as there are and as it is, becoming a non-discriminating image, this is the object of shamatha. For that which has become as many as there are and as it is, becoming an image with discrimination, this is the object of vipashyana. Like this, abiding without discrimination on the meaning of as it is and as many as there are is shamatha, and discriminatingly observing those two objects is vipashyana. It is also said in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: World Honored One, what is the object of shamatha? The Buddha said: There is only one, like this, a non-discriminating image. What is the object of vipashyana? The Buddha said: There is only one, an image with discrimination. What is the object of those two?
