Moreover, the greatest discipline is the Pāramitās and the Four Means of Gathering Disciples. Because Bodhisattvas have only two tasks: to ripen the causes and conditions for their own Buddhahood and to mature the minds of sentient beings. And these two are accomplished through the Pāramitās and the Four Means of Gathering. As it says in the Bodhisattvabhūmi: "The perfections bring to complete maturity one's own Buddha-qualities, and the objects of attraction bring all sentient beings to complete maturity. In short, one should understand that the activity of the virtuous qualities of Bodhisattvas is just this." Therefore, these two are also arranged here. If you want to know more details, look for them in the Bodhisattvabhūmi. So, how to practice these in equipoise and subsequent attainment? The great Jo-bo-je said: "The conduct of Bodhisattvas is, the great six perfections, etc., with the yoga of rising from equipoise, firmly cultivate this path of accumulation." As he said, a beginner Bodhisattva who has taken the vows of a Buddha-child and abides on the path of accumulation, whatever he practices, whether equipoise or subsequent attainment, does not go beyond the six perfections. Therefore, some of the six perfections are practiced in equipoise, and some are practiced in subsequent attainment. For example, some calm abiding and insight, whose nature is the calm abiding of meditation and the nature of the Prajñāpāramitā, are cultivated in equipoise. And the first three perfections and a part of meditation and wisdom are cultivated in subsequent attainment. Diligence comes in both equipoise and subsequent attainment. And a part of patience, that is, the firm conviction in the profound Dharma, sometimes also occurs in equipoise. The great Jo-bo-je said: "At the time of rising from equipoise, like the eight examples of illusion, by becoming accustomed to seeing all phenomena, purify the conceptual thoughts of subsequent attainment, and mainly learn skillful means. At the time of abiding in equipoise, calm abiding and insight are equal, and constantly become accustomed to this." Such conduct is very rare and difficult to do, and those who have not trained their minds feel pain in their hearts when they hear it. Even Bodhisattvas cannot actually practice it from the beginning, but if they understand it and even become accustomed to it as an object of aspiration, then later they will enter naturally without relying on effort, so habit is very important, even if they cannot actually enter

If, upon seeing these, one also abandons the habit of training the mind in them, then one will be very far from the path of purity. As it is said in "Praise of Limitless Qualities": "Whatever is heard will cause harm to this world; whatever you do will not harm your body for long; those actions, because of your habits, will eventually become your nature. Therefore, if you do not fully habituate yourself to merit, it will be difficult to increase." Therefore, those who have taken the vows of a Bodhisattva have no way to avoid learning behavior, and even those who have not taken the vows of the Engaging Mind should strive to cultivate the desire to learn and increase the enthusiasm for learning behavior. If one takes the vows, they will become very stable, so one should strive. From the "Great Being's Stages of the Path," the stages of the path for cultivating aspirational mind and learning the general conduct of Bodhisattvas have been explained. I prostrate with reverence at the feet of the venerable and compassionate ones. In particular, learning the last two perfections is the method of meditating on tranquility and insight, because these two are sequentially encompassed by the perfections of meditation and wisdom. Here there are six points: the benefits of meditating on tranquility and insight, the explanation that these two are the collection of all samadhis, the nature of tranquility and insight, the reasons why both must be meditated upon, the manner of determining the order, and the methods of practice for each. The first point is that all mundane and supramundane qualities of the Great and Small Vehicles are the result of tranquility and insight. As it is said in the "Exposition of the Thought Sutra": "Maitreya, all mundane and supramundane virtuous dharmas of the Hearers, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas should be known to be the result of tranquility and insight." Because it is said so. Are tranquility and insight not qualities of the continuum attained through cultivation? If one thinks, how can all those qualities be the result of those two? The actual nature of tranquility and insight, as will be explained, is the quality of the continuum attained through cultivation, so all the qualities of the Great and Small Vehicles are not the result of those two.
