Without vipassanā, no matter how long one practices śamatha, it can only suppress the manifestation of afflictions, and it is impossible to eradicate their seeds from the root. Therefore, one should not only practice śamatha, but also vipassanā. As the Middle Volume of the Stages of Meditation says, "By practicing only śamatha, yogis cannot eliminate obscurations, but only temporarily suppress afflictions. Without the arising of the light of wisdom, latent habits will not be completely destroyed." Therefore, in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it is taught, "Samādhi suppresses afflictions, and wisdom completely destroys latent habits." It is taught in this way. It is also said in the Noble King of Samādhi Sūtra, "Even if one practices samādhi, it does not destroy the notion of self. Its afflictions will again be greatly disturbed. Like practicing vipassanā here, practice samādhi. If one individually understands the selflessness of phenomena, individually analyzes it, and if one practices it, that is the cause for obtaining the fruit of nirvāṇa. No other cause can pacify it." It is said in this way. It is also said in the Bodhisattva Piṭaka, "If someone has not heard the categories of Dharma of the Bodhisattva Piṭaka, has not heard the Vinaya of the Noble Ones, and is content with only samādhi, then he will fall into arrogance due to pride, and will not be liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and turmoil. He will not be liberated from the cycle of the six realms, nor will he be liberated from the heap of suffering." Considering this, the Tathāgata taught, "Hearing teachings that are in accordance with others will lead to liberation from old age and death." It is said in this way. Therefore, wishing to eliminate all obscurations and generate completely pure wisdom, one should abide in śamatha and practice wisdom. As it is also taught in the Noble Ratnakūṭa Sūtra, "Abiding in ethics, one obtains samādhi. Having obtained samādhi, one practices wisdom. Through wisdom, one obtains completely pure wisdom. Through completely pure wisdom, one can

"The precepts are complete." Thus it was said. Also, in the Sutra of Faith and Practice in the Great Vehicle, it says: "Son of good family, if wisdom does not closely abide, I do not say that faith in the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattvas, how will the Great Vehicle arise?" Thus it is said. The way to determine the order is, as it says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "By the superior insight that is fully endowed with calm abiding, it is known that it can destroy all afflictions, therefore, one should first seek calm abiding." As it is said, first cultivate calm abiding, and then rely on it to cultivate insight. To this, some may think, in the First Stage of Meditation, it says: "Its object has no certainty." Thus it is said that the object of calm abiding is not fixed. As previously explained, the object of calm abiding has two aspects, the characteristic and the nature of phenomena. First, understand the meaning of selflessness, and then meditate on that, so that the mind is not distracted to other calm abiding, and both insight that focuses on emptiness can arise at the same time. Why first seek calm abiding, and then practice insight? To this, the reason why calm abiding precedes insight is that, to generate an understanding of the view of realizing selflessness, it is not necessary for calm abiding to precede it, because it is seen that even without calm abiding, a view can arise. For that view, to generate an experience that transforms the mind, it is also not necessary for calm abiding to precede it, because even without calm abiding, by repeatedly examining and familiarizing oneself with the wisdom of individual discrimination, it is not contradictory to generate a transformation of the mind. If it were contradictory, then for impermanence and the faults of samsara, and for cultivating the mind of enlightenment, generating an experience that transforms the mind would also depend on calm abiding, which would be too extreme, because the reasons are completely the same. So what is the way in which calm abiding is necessary for insight? To this, the Commentary says: "The meditation that distinguishes and extremely distinguishes with the wisdom of individual discrimination, as long as it cannot generate physical and mental pliancy, then it is a mental activity that is in accordance with insight, and when pliancy arises from that, it is said to be insight." Therefore, if calm abiding is not attained, then no matter how long one examines and meditates with the wisdom of individual discrimination, in the end it will not make the body
