. Being good at finding, having a good residence, good land, good friends, and possessing the means for yogic bliss. Thus it is said. Reducing desires means not having excessive attachment to good or many things such as Dharma robes. Being content means always being content with obtaining Dharma robes and other things that are just barely adequate. Completely abandoning many activities means completely abandoning evil activities such as trading, being overly familiar with householders and renunciates, practicing medicine, and astrology. Pure morality means not breaking any of the fundamental precepts of both the Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows, including those that are naturally sinful, and even if they are broken due to carelessness, quickly restoring them according to the Dharma with remorse. Completely abandoning thoughts of desire and so on means contemplating the faults of this life, such as killing and bondage, and the faults of future lives, such as falling into the lower realms, or contemplating that all things in samsara, whether pleasant or unpleasant, are impermanent and subject to destruction, and that one will inevitably be separated from them and oneself before long, so what is there to be attached to? Contemplate in this way, and thereby abandon all thoughts of desire. These are explained according to the view of the Intermediate Stages of Meditation. For more details, one should learn from the Hearer's Grounds. Such six dharmas are the key points of the causes and conditions for newly arising good samadhi, for the samadhi that has already arisen not to decline, and for it to increase from above. In particular, pure morality, seeing desire as a fault, and dwelling in a suitable place are the most important. Geshe Tonpa said: We think that relying solely on oral instructions is enough. The reason why samadhi does not arise from seeking only oral instructions is because one does not dwell in conducive conditions. Conducive conditions are the six dharmas mentioned earlier and so on. Furthermore, the first four perfections are the conducive conditions for the fifth perfection, Dhyana, as stated in the First Stages of Meditation: In order to attain tranquility, one does not crave for gain and other desirable objects, dwells well in morality, has the character of enduring suffering and so on, and if one exerts effort, one will quickly achieve it. Therefore, the noble one

It is also stated in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra and others that generosity and so on are the cause of the subsequent ones. It is said. The Lamp for the Path also says: "If the limbs of calm abiding are deficient, even if one strives to meditate diligently, even after thousands of years, samadhi will not be achieved." It is said. Therefore, those who wish to cultivate the samadhi of calm abiding and insight from the depths of their hearts, it is very important to strive for the limbs or collections of calm abiding, such as the thirteen mentioned in the Hearer's Ground. Based on this, there are two ways to cultivate calm abiding: preparation and actual practice. The first is to cultivate the mind of enlightenment for a long time, especially the six preparatory dharmas mentioned earlier, and as a part of it, to purify the nature of the common objects of focus for small and medium-sized individuals. The second has two aspects: how to cultivate with the conduct of the body, and explaining the order of cultivation itself. The first is that, as stated in the Middle and Lower Stages of Meditation, one should have the eight qualities of physical conduct on a very soft and comfortable cushion. Among them, the legs should be in the full lotus position, like that of the Lord Vairochana, or half lotus position, as appropriate. The eyes should not be opened too wide or closed too much, but focused on the tip of the nose. The body should not be bent too far back or too far forward, but straightened upright, and one should sit with mindfulness placed within. The shoulders should be placed straight and level. The head should not be too high or too low, and should not be tilted to one side, but placed straight, with the nose aligned with the navel. The teeth and lips should be kept naturally in their normal position. The tongue should be placed against the root of the upper teeth. The breath should not be emitted with sound, force, or agitation as it flows in and out. In any case, one should not feel the breath going in and out, but allow it to enter slowly and effortlessly. In the Hearer's Ground, the Buddha allowed sitting in the lotus position on a chair, a stool, or on grass, for five reasons: if the body is well-arranged, then that conduct is very conducive to the arising of cultivation, so cultivation arises quickly; sitting allows one to spend a long time, and that conduct
