It is clear that this is due to not understanding. Some people think that if they set a target and cling to it, they will fall into substantialism. Therefore, they do not focus their minds on such targets, but let them be without any support, and think that this is the practice of emptiness. This is completely not understanding the practice of emptiness. Because, if there is no awareness at that time, then the samadhi of practicing emptiness will not exist either; if there is awareness, then it must be admitted that there is an object of knowledge that is known by awareness. If there is an object of knowledge, then it is the target of that mind, because object, target, and object of knowledge are the same meaning. In this way, that samadhi must also be considered as substantialism, so this method is unreasonable. Furthermore, whether or not one enters the meditation of emptiness depends on whether the meditation is based on the view of realizing reality. It is not to establish meditation by not thinking about the object at all or by thinking. This will be elaborated in detail later. Those who want to abide without a target must also first set the idea that "no matter what, one's mind must not be distracted to any object," and then hold the mind. Therefore, it must be determined to focus the target only on the mind, and not to be distracted to any appearance. So, wanting to be without a target is contrary to one's own experience. Therefore, many great treatises on the practice of samadhi explain many targets, and the necessity of these targets is also as mentioned before. Therefore, one should be proficient in the object of focus for settling the mind. In the Stages of Meditation, it says that there is no certainty for the target of tranquility. In the Lamp for the Path, it says: "On any one object." This refers to not needing to definitely grasp a particular target, but not to say that any target can be treated casually. As for what one should take as a target, it depends on the person, from those who are more greedy to those who are more conceptual. In the Naga's Question Sutra, it is quoted: Naga, if a bhikkhu yogi, a practitioner of yoga, is only practicing greed, then he should focus his mind on the unattractive aspect. If he practices hatred, then he should focus on loving-kindness. If he practices ignorance, then he should focus on this very dependent arising.
