It is necessary to grasp the object. That is, according to the degree of appearance, grasp the general form of the body, and if some parts of the body appear very clearly, grasp those parts. If the body becomes unclear, grasp the whole. At that time, if one wants to meditate on yellow, but red appears, such as uncertain colors; if one wants to meditate on a sitting posture, but a standing posture appears, such as uncertain shapes; if one wants to meditate on one, but two appear, such as uncertain numbers; if one wants to meditate on large, but very small appears, such as uncertain sizes, then one must never follow these, but must take the fundamental object as the support of focus. Second, how to settle the mind on this has three points: establishing the faultless way, eliminating the faulty way, and indicating the duration of a session. The first point is: the samadhi to be cultivated here is one that possesses two special characteristics, namely: the mind possesses the power of very clear clarity, and it possesses the non-conceptual aspect of abiding single-pointedly on the object. Some add bliss to this, making it three; others add lucidity, making it four, but lucidity is included in the first characteristic, so it does not need to be mentioned separately. And the joy and bliss of experiencing a state of tranquility, although it arises as a result of the samadhi to be cultivated here, it is not concomitant with the samadhi included in the first dhyana's approximation, and because the fourth dhyana samadhi is said to be the supreme basis for cultivating the qualities of all three vehicles, and the fourth dhyana samadhi is not concomitant with either bodily bliss or mental bliss, it is not listed here. Although some samadhis included in the formless realm do not have great clarity, as it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras, "Abandoning the formless dhyana." Therefore, except for a few bodhisattvas who have attained mastery, the rest of the bodhisattvas rely on the samadhi included in the dhyana to cultivate qualities, so there is no fault in explaining the characteristics of clarity. The appearance of such clarity is obstructed by sinking; and the non-conceptuality of focusing on one object is obstructed by excitement. Therefore, sinking and excitement are obstacles to achieving pure samadhi.

That is the reason why it becomes the main obstacle. Therefore, if one does not master the subtle and coarse dullness and excitement, and does not know the pure way of cultivating samadhi that prevents these two, let alone vipassana, even shamatha cannot arise. Therefore, wise people who are dedicated to samadhi should be proficient in this method. Dullness and excitement are obstacles to the accomplishment of shamatha. The actual methods of recognizing and preventing obstacles will be explained below. Here, we will explain how to generate samadhi, which is a favorable condition for the accomplishment of shamatha. Here, samadhi is the aspect of the mind being one-pointedly focused on the object of focus, and it must be a continuous dwelling on the object. For this, two methods are needed: one is the method of not distracting the mind from the fundamental object of focus, and the other is to know whether or not one is distracted and whether or not one will be distracted. The first method is mindfulness, and the second is awareness. The commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras says: Mindfulness and awareness are what bring (the mind) close (to the object of focus), one prevents the mind from scattering from the object of focus, and the second thoroughly knows whether the mind is scattering. Thus it is said. If mindfulness weakens and the object of focus is forgotten, one will be distracted and immediately lose the object of focus. Therefore, mindfulness of not forgetting the object of focus is the root. The way that mindfulness brings the mind close to the object of focus is: As mentioned earlier, after clearly establishing the object of focus, at least one appearance arises, and then, by knowing it, a strong grasping manner of holding tightly is generated, and the alertness of the mind is raised, and one abides without making any new speculations. Regarding mindfulness, the Compendium of Topics says: What is mindfulness? It is the mind's non-forgetfulness of a familiar object, having the function of non-distraction. Thus, it is said to have three characteristics. Among them, the characteristic of the object of focus is: mindfulness does not arise for an object that was not previously familiar, therefore it is said "for a familiar object." Here, it refers to the appearance of the previously determined object of focus. The characteristic of the appearance or the manner of holding is: the mind's non-forgetfulness, that is, the aspect of the mind not forgetting that object, here it refers to not forgetting the object of focus. Not
