How can one enter the city of the land? Without wisdom, like a blind person, these five perfections are without a target, unable to touch enlightenment. Thus it is said. Therefore, generosity and so on do not become pure, and correct views are not found. Without wisdom, in seeking the fruit, the nature of generosity does not become pure. Abandoning the benefit of others is said to be the best of generosity. The rest is a means of increasing wealth. Thus it is said. If the darkness is not dispelled by the light of wisdom, then one will not be endowed with pure discipline. For the most part, without wisdom, discipline is not pure, and due to the faults of knowledge, it becomes tainted with afflictions. Thus it is said. If the mind is disturbed by the faults of wrong wisdom, then the qualities of patience do not like to abide in it. Holding an attitude of displeasure towards distinguishing good and bad, like a king without virtue having a reputation. Thus it is said. Those who are praised by the wise, and there is nothing more subtle and profound than that, not obscured by the faults of desire, without a straight mind, wisdom cannot proceed. Thus it is said. If one holds the thought of not striving in the way of wisdom, then their view will not become pure. Thus it is said. Among them, the fame of the king refers to a king without virtue, whose fame, though momentarily prominent, will eventually decline. Thus, the darkness of ignorance and delusion will not recede until the great light of wisdom arises. Once it arises, it will recede, so how much effort should be put into generating wisdom with what power and strength? Just as when the great light of the sun arises, the streams of beings are covered by darkness, but because the light of wisdom has great power, everything will be eliminated, leaving only an empty name. Thus it is said. Therefore, one should exert all one's strength and strive in such a way of wisdom. Thus it is said. The causes of ignorance are: relying on bad friends, laziness, carelessness, excessive sleep, not liking to discriminate and think, not liking vastness, arrogance of thinking one knows when one does not, having strong wrong views, and being discouraged by thinking that one cannot do it like others, and not liking to rely on the wise. That is, laziness and carelessness, relying on bad friends, being controlled by sleep, a state of not thinking, not having faith in the supreme wisdom of the Able One, and being suppressed by wrong pride and not asking for reasons.

Due to the cause arising from the lowly mind clinging to self, there is no faith in relying on the wise, and evil thoughts, highly poisonous wrong views, are the cause of ignorance. Thus it is said. Therefore, one should respectfully serve the lama worthy of reliance, and seek to hear the Dharma in order to accomplish wisdom. Thus it is said. Having relied on the wise, one must strive to hear the Dharma according to one's ability. If there is no hearing, then the wisdom arising from hearing and the wisdom arising from thinking will not arise. In that case, one will not know what to meditate on, because if one hears the Dharma, by thinking about its meaning, the wisdom arising from thinking will arise, and from that, a broader wisdom arising from meditation will arise. Furthermore, Glorious Hero said: The blind who have heard little do not know the way to meditate. Without it, what can one think about? Therefore, one should strive to hear, from that cause, by meditating as one thinks, vast wisdom arises. Thus it is said. Lord Maitreya also said: The conceptual thoughts of the three spheres are considered to be the obscuration of knowledge. Whatever conceptual thoughts there are, such as stinginess, are considered to be the obscuration of afflictions. Other than wisdom, there is nothing else to abandon these. Therefore, wisdom is supreme, and its basis is hearing. Therefore, hearing is supreme. Thus it is said. In the Compendium of Trainings, it is also said: One should seek to hear the Dharma with patience, and then, one should dwell in the forest, and diligently engage in meditative equipoise. Thus it is said. In its auto-commentary, it is also said: Impatience is because one cannot endure weariness, therefore diligence in hearing the Dharma and so forth will decline. Without hearing, one will not know the methods of meditation and the methods of purifying afflictions. Therefore, one should seek to hear the Dharma without weariness. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by Sredmed's Son, it is also said: Thus, son of good family, if one possesses hearing, wisdom will arise. If one possesses wisdom, afflictions will be completely pacified. Without afflictions, the demons will not find an opportunity. Thus it is said. Thus, for those who wish to practice the Dharma properly, the supreme cause for generating the wisdom of discriminating Dharma, the life of the path, is to have much hearing of the immaculate scriptures and treatises. Although it is established by scripture and reasoning, to think that it is necessary but not to practice it is truly a practice
