It is so. It is said so. Regarding the reason why other qualities are needed: For example, if a particularly excellent ornament made of fine gold is adorned with jewels such as Indranila, it becomes even more captivating than before. Similarly, the five, from generosity to meditation, are like golden ornaments. If they are connected with the adornment of wisdom that can distinguish between what is reasonable and what is unreasonable, they become extremely wonderful. This is because it makes the five, such as generosity, extremely pure. It is similar to how the mind's consciousness distinguishes between the good and bad of the objects of the five senses, such as the eye, and then engages or withdraws. Furthermore, the glorious hero said: These merits, such as generosity, become particularly powerful with the protector of wisdom. Like a fine gold ornament adorned with jewels, shining with light. For their respective purposes, those qualities and strengths, this wisdom accomplishes great things. Just as the differences in the objects of each sense are clarified by the mind's other power. It is said so. Similarly, for other faculties such as faith, wisdom itself is the main thing. If there is a protector of wisdom, then one will know well the faults and virtues of stinginess, etc., in generosity and faith, etc., and will become skilled in the means of exhausting afflictions and increasing virtues. The nature of the faculties such as faith is also: Among the faculties, like the mind, wisdom is the main thing. Possessing its protector, by knowing virtues and faults, one becomes skilled in the way of exhausting afflictions. It is said so. Even when a Bodhisattva gives flesh to a beggar, it is like taking it from a medicinal tree, and he is not moved by thoughts of arrogance or cowardice, etc., because of the wisdom that has realized suchness. With the wisdom that sees the faults of samsara and nirvana, practicing morality for the sake of others makes morality extremely pure. By understanding the faults and virtues of impatience and patience through wisdom, and taming the mind, one is not robbed by wrong actions and suffering. By knowing well the basis for exerting effort through wisdom, and exerting effort in that, one can make the path's determination great. The supreme joy and bliss of meditation, which abides in the meaning of suchness, is accomplished by wisdom based on reason.

Therefore, making the five, such as generosity, completely pure depends on wisdom. If the eye of wisdom is clear, even if a Bodhisattva gives away his own flesh, he will not discriminate like a medicinal tree, and there will be no high or low for him. Thus it is said. If one does not practice morality for one's own sake, the wise will see the faults of the prison of existence. Since this is the case, why speak of not practicing for the sake of the entire world that is deluded by demons? Thus it is said. For those who possess wisdom, there will be no harm, because they possess the virtue of patience, so they will not be harmed. Just as the most tamed elephants can endure various kinds of karma. Merely making diligent effort will lead to exhaustion, but if supported by the help of wisdom, great accomplishments will be achieved. Thus it is said. How can such a supreme meditative bliss, which is defiled by accumulated sins and great faults, be achieved in the minds of inferior people who rely on the reasoning of wrong paths? Thus it is said. Wisdom enables two seemingly contradictory qualities to not contradict each other. When a Bodhisattva becomes a universal monarch ruling over the four continents, he is not controlled by sensual pleasures, which is due to the power of having a wise minister. Similarly, even though intense love arises from seeing beings as pleasing, it is not mixed with even a little attachment; even though intense and lasting compassion arises from being unable to bear the suffering of beings, one is not overwhelmed by sorrow and does not lose interest in virtuous activities; even though one possesses immeasurable joy, there is no scattering of the mind from its object; even though one constantly possesses great equanimity, one does not neglect the welfare of beings for even a moment. These are all the functions of wisdom, because wisdom prevents the obstacles that make it difficult to achieve these qualities equally. Thus it is said: Bodhisattvas who possess the five sensual pleasures like divine objects and have great royal power, their nature does not become improper, which is also due to the power of having a wise minister. For the single-flavored love that benefits others, they have completely abandoned the defilement of attachment; for the compassion that cannot bear the suffering of others, they are not made lazy by the burden of sorrow; even though they possess supreme joy, there is no scattering; and they do not neglect the welfare of beings.

Great equanimity, and the antidotal paths of those various qualities, are beautifully adorned by being blocked by great wisdom. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the 'Praise of the Praiseworthy,' it says, 'One does not abandon the nature of reality, and also conforms to conventional reality.' As it is said, one does not need to abandon the nature of reality, having found great certainty that the objects of focus that are grasped as characteristics are not established even as a particle, and one does not contradict or conform to conventional reality, having found certainty from the depths that results arise separately from inner and outer causes and conditions. What is extremely contradictory to others is not contradictory and conforms to the wise. Also, in that same text, it says, 'In allowance and prohibition, your teachings are certain in some cases, and uncertain in others, and there is no mutual contradiction.' As it is said, there are many different allowances and prohibitions in the higher and lower vehicles and in the two, Sutra and Tantra, and although it is contradictory for a single person to practice both of these when seeking the intention of the vast scriptures, to the ignorant who lack the power of intelligence, it is not contradictory to the wise, and this is done by wisdom. Thus, although there are limitless instances of what is contradictory to those without wisdom being non-contradictory to those with wisdom, this is the supreme praise of wisdom, that wisdom distinguishes that the intention is not contradictory, although there are many allowances and prohibitions in the establishment of the two truths and in the scriptures themselves. In short, all qualities arise from wisdom, like a loving mother to her child. What is so amazing about such perfection arising? The ten powers of the Sugata are the most excellent of powers, and all things that are incomparable and supreme, and all other collections of qualities, also arise relying on such wisdom as their cause. In this world, like a treasure trove of arts, and like the eyes of scriptures, however many there are, and the wisdom and mantras that completely protect, and the various distinctions of the Dharma that are arranged in various ways, and the various names, the various doors of liberation, and the various ways of benefiting the world, the sons of the Buddhas, the great powerful ones, manifest in various ways, all of these arise from the power of wisdom. Thus it is said. The faults of not having wisdom: without wisdom, generosity and so on become like being without eyes, from the 'Compendium': The blind, without a target, hundreds of millions of billions, do not know the way.
