Furthermore, if someone steals some aspects of virtue, or if a great fault arises in the mind, and both occur simultaneously, it becomes difficult to increase virtuous conduct. For example, someone thinks that knowledge is important for practicing Dharma, so they only take knowledge as the core and pursue it. Although they eliminate the ignorance of not knowing through hearing, if they do not guard against other afflictions, they will be stained with many misdeeds during this time, causing their own continuum to become very bad. Also, someone thinks that taming one's own continuum is more important than knowledge, so they mainly meditate, abandoning the guarding against the enemy of ignorance, not listening to the Dharma and not learning, being very ignorant of the rules of opening and closing of the vows they have promised, and often falling into violation. Similarly, when fighting with afflictions, just like a sword falling from the hand on the battlefield, one would not delay at all and immediately pick it up for fear of being killed, if one forgets the aspects of abandoning and taking, and loses the sword of mindfulness that does not forget, one must immediately rely on mindfulness for fear of falling into the lower realms. As it is said: If the sword falls on the battlefield, quickly pick it up for fear, likewise, if the sword of mindfulness is lost, quickly recall the fear of hell. And so on. Mindfulness is very important, and the Holy Nagarjuna also said: The Lord of the body and retinue, the Tathagata showed as the only path, one should diligently guard this mindfulness, if mindfulness is lost, all dharmas are destroyed. And so on. For the object on which mindfulness relies, one should also carefully distinguish it with wisdom, and then hold it with mindfulness, mindfulness itself does not have the ability to independently distinguish objects. So how does wisdom need to distinguish? Generally speaking, it is all the places of taking and abandoning mentioned in the scriptures, especially the places of abandoning and taking of the vows that each person has promised. If one applies mindfulness and awareness to these, one can perfect the practice, but if one only applies mindfulness and awareness to focusing the mind on one object, one will not reach anywhere. That is to say, just like on the battlefield, one strives not to let the sword fall from the beginning, and even if it falls, one must pick it up immediately, because there is a fear of being killed in the heart.

Just as reaching that point, those who practice the stages of the path must, from the very beginning, worry about losing mindfulness of what to adopt and abandon. If they forget, they must immediately recall it, because when mindfulness is lost, they fear that the evil consequences of being stained by faults will lead to falling into the lower realms. This is not just lip service, but a genuine fear that arises in the mind. This also depends on cultivating based on the foundation of karma and its effects. Therefore, for those of us who do not think these are profound teachings, the root of the path, the root of the qualities of practice that please the wise, is already severed. So, why be afraid of even small faults, not allowing them to continue, but immediately stopping them? For example, if a poisoned arrow creates a small wound on the body, the poison will quickly spread throughout the body, so the wound must be cut off and discarded. Similarly, even if a fault only creates a small wound in the mind, if it is left unattended, it will quickly spread throughout the mind, not becoming smaller, but becoming larger. Therefore, from the beginning, prevent it from happening, and if it does happen, immediately cut off its continuation. Just as poison spreads throughout the body relying on blood, similarly, if an opportunity is found, faults will spread throughout the mind. So, how should those who want to win the battle against afflictions rely on mindfulness and awareness? Just like holding a container filled with oil, with someone standing nearby holding a sword, threatening to kill if the oil is spilled, those with discipline must be just as strict. Be strict like that. This is the end of the story of Katyayana's appearance, which should be understood from the scriptures. When being strict like this, in general, if faults appear, especially causes of laziness such as sleep, do not accept them, but stop them head-on. Therefore, if a snake comes into your lap, just as you would quickly get up, similarly, if sleep and laziness come, quickly stop them. This is not just about interrupting, but also about generating displeasure towards the faults that have already occurred. I have done this before, so I am still wandering in samsara. Especially after taking the Bodhisattva vows, abiding in a place that is incompatible with its precepts is extremely shameful.
