If practitioners can well understand the methods of attaining enlightenment and uplift their wisdom, then the success of all things is like having them in hand. As it says in the Jataka tales: "Discouragement does not help to escape poverty, so do not be sad and suffer. If you rely on those skilled in accomplishing what is needed, even the most difficult can be easily liberated. Therefore, do not be afraid or displeased, accomplish what is needed with the right methods. If the glory of the wise is uplifted by steadfastness, then the success of all things is in hand." Arya Asanga repeatedly said that it is necessary to well understand the methods of learning the vast, while not being discouraged, and not being satisfied with just a little merit. But now, even if only a little something that seems like merit or has the nature of merit arises, one thinks that they have opened up a great path to enlightenment and are satisfied with being accustomed to it. If someone skilled in the key points of the path points out through the means of doctrine and logic that this is only a part of merit, but that one cannot go anywhere with just that, it seems that one becomes very discouraged upon hearing such an implication. Therefore, do not be satisfied with one-sided merit, but seek higher qualities, and although it is necessary to learn endless teachings, those who are not discouraged are very rare. Second, accumulating the resources of favorable conditions and supporting companions has four aspects: generating aspiration, stability, the power of joy, and the power of abandonment. First, because it is said that desire is the basis of diligence, here aspiration is desire. The reason why it is necessary to generate aspiration is: "I, in the past and present, have suffered such poverty because of lacking aspiration for the Dharma. Who would abandon aspiration for the Dharma? The Buddha said that the root of all virtuous deeds is aspiration." Like that. How to generate aspiration? "Its root is always contemplating the ripening fruit." This refers to contemplating how desirable and undesirable fruits arise from black and white karma. Because it is said that faith is the basis of desire, in order to generate the two desires of abandoning and accepting through the two kinds of faith, namely the faith of conviction. That is to say, one should contemplate the general laws of karma and its effects, and especially the benefits of the conduct of bodhisattvas.

And, contemplate the cause and effect of faults that transcend these, which is understood according to the circumstances. Thus, entering the door of the Great Vehicle with faith is to promise to eliminate all faults of oneself and others, and to accomplish all virtues. If purifying each fault, including its habitual tendencies, and fully increasing each virtue requires familiarization over countless eons, then I do not even have a fraction of the diligence to eliminate and accomplish these, I have wasted my leisure in vain, thinking thus, one must urge oneself. The faults of oneself and others are: countless faults I should destroy, wherein, for just one fault, countless eons are exhausted. I have not even seen a part of starting to eliminate faults, how can I not be afraid of the place of immeasurable suffering? The virtues of oneself and others are: many virtues I should accomplish, for which, just one virtue, requires familiarization over countless eons. I have never generated familiarization with even a fraction of virtue, the life obtained like what, I have wasted in vain, how strange! Thus it is said. The power of steadfastness is to complete what one has started to strive for without turning back. That is, at first, do not engage in anything casually, but examine it well, and if you have the ability, engage in it, and if you do not have the ability, do not engage in it. Once you have started, it is better not to start at all than to abandon it midway. The reason is that if one becomes accustomed to abandoning vows, in future lives one will also abandon the precepts one has promised to keep, etc., due to the same cause, thus increasing sin in this life, and increasing suffering as its result in future lives, and because one is thinking about the previous thing, other virtuous deeds cannot be accomplished, and because one has turned back from the previous thing, its result will be diminished, and the previous thing itself will not be completed, thus it cannot be fully accomplished. In short, the thing that one has vowed to do will not be completed, and it will also become an obstacle to accomplishing other things, and due to the same cause, the vows one has promised to keep will also not be steadfast. Thus, having examined the preparation at the beginning, either start or do not start. Not starting is the best, but once you have started, do not turn back. In future lives, one will become accustomed to this, and sin and suffering will increase.
