Having recognized this, if I do not abandon the conduct of Bodhi, why would I not attain Bodhi? Thus it is said. Furthermore, those Buddhas who have passed away having become enlightened in the past, who are presently enlightened and abiding, and who will attain enlightenment in the future, did not accomplish the path by one who was already a Buddha. Rather, thinking that it is only someone like us who ascends higher and higher to become enlightened, one should avoid discouragement. In the Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it says: The Bodhisattva should think thus: Those Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, those who have manifestly and completely awakened, those who are manifestly and completely awakening, and those who will manifestly and completely awaken, all manifestly and completely awakened, manifestly and completely awaken, and will manifestly and completely awaken through such means, such paths, and such diligence. From there, those Tathagatas also became Tathagatas and then manifestly and completely awakened, not that they manifestly and completely awakened from the beginning. I too, in order to manifestly and completely awaken to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhi, with diligence common to all sentient beings and diligence aimed at all sentient beings, will seek and strive in that way. Also, in the Praise of Infinite Qualities, it says: Whoever has attained the state of the Sugata, they have also fallen into states much lower than this. Therefore, when you fall into distress, do not denigrate yourself. It is not right to disparage me, it makes an accomplished person feel discouraged. Thus it is said. The arising of discouragement is also because the Buddha's qualities are infinite, and the fruit follows the cause. Therefore, when practicing the path, one must cultivate from the infinite doors of qualities and eliminate from the infinite doors of faults. Having understood this well, and then looking at oneself, discouragement arises. If, when practicing the infinite qualities of the Buddha, one only pursues small aspects of qualities and clings to them, thinking that one will achieve enlightenment in this way, then the understanding of the path will be reversed, and like now, discouragement will never arise. However, this is not a good sign, but rather it means that one has not gained certainty about the way to proceed on the path, or that one's understanding is incomplete.

Now, because one has not taken it into one's own hands, one is obscured by something that seems easy, that is the reason. Once one engages in practice, even if one only shows the complete system of the path, roughly arranged from beginning to end, someone might say, "If only that much is needed, who can do it?" and then it seems they will abandon it well. Sharawa also said, "The conduct of a Bodhisattva who has not engaged in practice, everything becomes as easy as shooting an arrow, and only discouragement will arise." Now, because one does not possess perfectly complete Dharma, one does not go to the point of discouragement and self-deprecation. If one possesses it perfectly, then there is a great danger of discouragement and self-deprecation," he said, which is truly wonderful. To obtain that, the method of refuting discouragement is: To accomplish Buddhahood, one must give up one's limbs and so on. If one thinks, "I cannot do such a thing," then one must endure that much suffering. Even without engaging in practice, just staying in samsara at will, one experiences unspeakable suffering such as the body being cut, torn, pierced, and burned, and even there one does not accomplish one's own benefit. The suffering of practicing austerities for the sake of enlightenment is not even a fraction of the previous suffering, and the necessity of accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others is also great. However, if one thinks, "I am afraid to give up my limbs and so on," without examining the heavy and light, one is simply foolishly afraid. In countless millions of eons, one has been cut, pierced, burned, and moved numerous times, and one will not attain enlightenment. The suffering of my accomplishing enlightenment is limited. Like the suffering of making wounds on the body to eliminate pain, internal damage, and harm. All doctors also heal, making one free from disease through discomfort. Therefore, to destroy many sufferings, one should endure small discomforts. So it is said. Giving up the body is not something one does not do when one is afraid from the beginning, but by gradually learning generosity, attachment to one's own body disappears, and when the power of great compassion increases, if it becomes a great matter, then there will be no difficulty in giving at the time of giving. Even ordinary medical treatment like this is not done by the best doctors, but with very gentle rituals, they heal countless serious illnesses. For generosity of vegetables and so on, the guide also first guides. Accustom to that.
