Furthermore, because the main and supreme cause for the virtuous Dharma of Bodhisattvas to be accomplished so correctly is diligence alone, and others are not like that, therefore, diligence is what causes the attainment of the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, thus the Tathagatas teach and show. Also, in the Compendium of Perfections, it says: If one has great diligence, completely without weariness, There is nothing that cannot be obtained or accomplished. Also, all non-humans are happy to benefit him, All kinds of Samadhi will be attained. The days and nights, all times, pass with fruit, One will not be inferior due to the accumulation of qualities. Through meanings that surpass human Dharma, Like a lotus flower, one will increase greatly. The faults are, in the Questions of Sagaramati, it says: For the lazy, enlightenment is very far, extremely far. For the lazy, there is nothing from generosity to wisdom. For the lazy, there is no benefit for others. Also, in the Mindfulness Sutra, it says: The one root of all afflictions is laziness; whoever has it, whoever has laziness, that person has no Dharma. As it is said, if there is no diligence, being controlled by laziness, one will be impoverished of all white Dharma, and all the temporary and ultimate purposes of a person will be lost. There are two divisions of diligence: the divisions themselves and the means of generating diligence. The first has three: armor-like diligence, diligence in accumulating virtuous Dharma, and diligence in benefiting sentient beings. The first is: When Bodhisattvas begin diligence, before the action, they should wear this armor of thought that is preceded by the joy of the mind: Even if I have to stay in hell for countless great kalpas, which is equal to a thousand great kalpas of accumulated days and nights, three countless great kalpas, hundreds of thousands of kotis of times, in order to eliminate the suffering of one sentient being, I will be happy, and I will strive for perfect enlightenment, and I will not give up diligence, let alone a shorter time and less suffering.

What need is there to speak of the earth? Such is the armor-like diligence. It is also firm for a Bodhisattva to merely rejoice and have faith in such diligence. If one initiates diligence for the sake of unsurpassed enlightenment, it will stabilize immeasurable causes, what need is there to mention those who possess that diligence? For them, for the sake of enlightenment and others, there is no hardship in which one's mind shrinks from having to practice, as it is said in the Bodhisattva grounds. If one becomes accustomed to such thoughts, it will definitely become a cause for awakening the power of the Mahayana lineage, so it should be practiced. Also, from the Compendium of Trainings: "In the past and future, as equal to the limits of samsara, In the vast and long days and nights, Accumulating such for years, In long periods of time, Like the number of drops of water in the ocean of kalpas, One supreme mind of enlightenment will arise, In such a way, each and every other accumulation, Even if one has to accomplish them, one should not be weary with compassion. Accomplish the sacred enlightenment without laziness, Abandoning the suffering of oneself in samsara, If one generates such stable and immeasurable armor, For the courageous hero with compassion, It is said to be the first true undertaking." This is also said to be the armor-like diligence. Furthermore, from beginningless samsara until now, taking one day as a unit, thirty days as a month, and twelve months as a year, after hundreds of thousands of years have passed, one mind of enlightenment arises. Seeing one Buddha, one like the number of grains of sand in the Ganges River, knows the mind and conduct of one sentient being. In such a way, even if one needs to know the minds and conduct of all sentient beings, one should not be discouraged. It is said that the inexhaustible armor and inexhaustible wisdom were asked and spoken, which is the unsurpassed armor-like diligence. In short, if one can generate such a thought, one can easily complete limitless accumulations, purify immeasurable obscurations, and become a supreme cause of non-retrogression. The more one rejoices in the length of time, the faster one will attain enlightenment. Those who have no interest in limitless conduct and extremely long periods of time, and who desire to attain enlightenment in a short time, will make the path to enlightenment extremely long. This is the heart of the Bodhisattvas.
