Burning and so on. Even if I experience thousands of times in hell, I have not done anything for myself or others. This is not so harmful, and great goals can be achieved. For the suffering of eliminating the suffering of beings, one should only feel joy. As it is said. Thinking about the past austerities that did not accomplish any self or other benefits, why should one not be able to endure the suffering of achieving great goals now? Therefore, even if there is suffering, being able to do such a thing, I feel that I have gained benefits, and thus generate high aspirations. Furthermore, being deceived by bad friends, on meaningless evil paths, one also endures austerities such as jumping on three-pointed spears and serving five fires. Thinking about enduring the many sufferings of farming, business, and warfare for the sake of small worldly needs, one should generate courage that is not afraid of austerities. Thinking about the benefits of averting immeasurable suffering: just as a person who is about to be killed, if only a finger is cut off to escape being killed, great joy will arise. Similarly, if with the small suffering of human austerity, one can universally and permanently prevent the endless cycle of rebirth, especially the suffering of hell and other evil realms, that would be very good. Thinking well about the differences between temporary and long-term suffering, one can generate the courage not to fear austerity. Cutting off the hand of a person who is about to be killed, if one is saved because of it, why is it not good? If one can be freed from hell because of human suffering, why is it not good? So it is said. It is not difficult to get used to it from a small age: there is nothing that does not become easy with habit. Therefore, by practicing small harms, one can also endure great harms. As it is said. Putting on the armor of accepting the mind of suffering, starting from small sufferings and gradually adapting, the power of accepting suffering will become stronger and stronger. It is also said in the Compendium of Trainings: In this regard, if one first gets used to small sufferings, one will achieve getting used to difficult and very difficult things. For example, just as due to the power of habit, all sentient beings perceive suffering as happiness. Similarly, one is accustomed to placing near the perception of happiness in all suffering that occurs.

Therefore, one should abide closely in the perception of happiness. Thus it is said. These also come from the request of the Fierce One (Devadatta). One should abandon the mind like a cottonwood petal. As it is also said in the Ornament of the Trunk: Daughter, in order to destroy all afflictions, you should generate an unbearable mind. As it is said, one needs a very firm courage of mind; a weak mind will not do. Therefore, if one generates courage from the beginning without diminishing it, then even great suffering will become a friend. For example, when some warriors enter battle, seeing their own blood flowing, they take it as a cause for generating courage. If one has not heard of such a thing from the beginning, or if one has heard of it but says, "I will not be like that," and thus belittles oneself, then even small suffering will become a cause for turning away from the path. For example, some cowards faint and fall down even when they see the blood of others. Some, when they see their own blood, their courage and steadfastness increase even more. Some, when they see the blood of others, faint and collapse. This is due to the stability of the mind and the nature of cowardice. Thus it is said. To explain extensively from the basis: If one must accept the arrival of suffering, then what kind of suffering does one think of accepting from what kind of situation? In this regard, there are eight: Relying on the place: robes, alms, bedding, mats, medicine for the sick, and utensils—these are the places for increasing celibacy. One should not be displeased or discouraged when these things are obtained poorly, sparsely, without respect from others, or given after a long delay, and one should accept the suffering arising from these situations. Relying on worldly dharmas: not obtaining, unpleasantness, blame, suffering, destruction, exhaustion, old age, sickness, death—these things that have the nature of destruction to death, these nine are worldly dharmas. One should individually examine and accept the suffering that relies on all of these or each one individually. Relying on conduct: walking, standing, sitting, and sleeping are the four conducts. By means of the first and third of these, when training the mind day and night from obscurations, one should accept the suffering arising from that. Do not at an inappropriate time
