Sala! At the time of death, enjoying happiness for a hundred years and enjoying happiness for about a year are the same. Because both are merely objects of memory, there is no difference between happiness and suffering at that time. For example, experiencing happiness for a hundred years in a dream and experiencing happiness for a short time, when awakened, there is no difference between happiness and unhappiness. Thinking like this, if attachment to gain and respect disappears, then one will not be unhappy with insults and the proclamation of bad names, etc. Because there is no pursuit of establishing oneself as special in front of others, even if it is not achieved, the happiness of the mind will not disappear. Like this: Because of hindering the attainment of gain, if I do not want this, I will abandon my gain, and sins will remain firm. I would rather die today than live long through wrong livelihood. Even if I exist for a long time, it is the same suffering of death. After experiencing happiness for a hundred years in a dream, who is the one who awakens, and who is the one who awakens after experiencing happiness for a short time? For those who have awakened, in either case, that happiness will not return. Both long life and short life are the same at the time of death. Even if one obtains much gain and enjoys happiness for a long time, one goes away naked and empty-handed, just like being robbed by a thief. So it is said. Second, refuting the dislike of enemies' prosperity and the liking of their decline: In order to accomplish the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, after generating Bodhicitta, to be angry at sentient beings themselves gaining happiness, and claiming to desire all sentient beings to attain Buddhahood, yet being unhappy with them gaining a little gain and respect, is very contradictory. Therefore, for the prosperity of anyone, one must abandon jealousy and generate joy from the bottom of one's heart. If it is not like this, Bodhicitta and accomplishing the benefit and happiness of sentient beings will become mere names. Because one wishes all sentient beings to be happy, after generating the mind in Bodhicitta, if sentient beings themselves gain happiness, then why be angry? If one says that one wishes sentient beings, who are offered to by the three realms, to attain Buddhahood, then seeing a little service and respect, why grieve for them? What is it that you are healing?

You should give alms, and if relatives thereby obtain a livelihood, are you displeased and angry instead? Since you do not wish them to go, how can you expect bodhi? Where is the bodhicitta in one who is angry at the prosperity of others? If he obtains from that, and dwells in the house of the benefactor, if you do not have all of that, what use is it to him whether you give or not? So it is said. Rejoicing at the ruin of enemies and the evil thought of wishing for their destruction does not harm the enemy, but only causes suffering to oneself. Even if it does harm, one should consider the faults of causing oneself and others to be ruined, and therefore prevent it in every way. One should do this: If you are displeased with an enemy, what can you be pleased about? Merely by your wish, it will not become a cause of harm to him. Even if suffering is accomplished by your desire, what can you be pleased about? If you become complacent, what other destruction is there worse than that? This hook set by the fisherman of affliction is an unbearable barb. The mind caught by it, even in the hellish cauldron, will surely be cooked by the wardens of hell. So it is said. Like that, if one looks with complete displeasure at things that hinder the desires of oneself and one's relatives, and at things that accomplish what one does not wish to see, and at the prosperity of one's enemies, then unhappiness arises from that. If that unhappiness increases, it generates hatred, and if complete displeasure disappears, unhappiness also disappears. If unhappiness disappears, hatred will not arise, therefore one should use the reasons stated before to completely prevent displeasure towards those things, and prevent anger from many aspects, because the faults of anger are very great. The key to preventing anger is to use the reasons of the bodhisattvas stated before, to debate with one's own afflictions, and then turn the tables on oneself, thereby destroying the chief of enemies—anger. Therefore, by carefully examining with discriminating wisdom and preventing anger from many aspects, one can eliminate many components of anger and generate patience from many aspects. Because this is an experience arising from a deep understanding of the meaning of the authentic scriptures, obtained through immaculate reasoning, the habit is very firm. Those who abandon the examination and meditation of discriminating wisdom, for these bodhi and so forth,
