It arises from causes that are in accordance with its arising, and that is because of past non-virtuous actions. By the power of one's own karma, the harmer is involuntarily driven. Therefore, one should not be angry with others for one's own suffering. One should think like this, blaming oneself, and in every way prevent anger from arising. For example, the guardians of the hell realms are born from one's own bad karma and then harm oneself. I have previously harmed sentient beings in this way, therefore it is reasonable that sentient beings harm me and I experience this harm. And, children do not want suffering, yet they crave the cause of suffering. If harm comes from one's own fault, what is there to blame others for? For example, like the guardians of hell and the forest of razor leaves, if this is born from one's own karma, who should one be angry with? Driven by my own karma, those who harm me arise. If they go to hell because of it, have I not destroyed them? So it is said. The Venerable Sharavapa also said, "When I say I will not retaliate, it actually shows that I have no habit of Dharma." If one examines the object, it is not appropriate to be angry. Generating anger towards the harmer is because one cannot bear suffering, which is contradictory, because one cannot bear the small suffering of the present, yet one diligently accumulates the cause of immeasurable suffering in the lower realms. Therefore, one should think, "I am very foolish," blaming oneself and striving not to let anger arise. If I cannot even bear this much suffering now, then why not prevent anger, the cause of the suffering of hell? So it is said. The suffering caused by harm is the result of past bad karma, so experiencing it exhausts past bad karma. If one can endure it, one will not accumulate new sins, and one will increase much merit. One should regard the harmer as a benefactor, as if he has come to purify one's own sins, without even considering the decline of his own Dharma. As it says in the Jataka: "Who does not consider the decline of his own Dharma, but is like one who has come to purify my sins, if I cannot endure this, what could be more ungrateful than that?"

Furthermore, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'Whatever are the fruits of unwholesome actions previously done, it is only through patience that one can exhaust them. Because harming others and being angry only increase the seeds of suffering.' Therefore, just as one endures bloodletting and cauterization as a means of curing a great illness, it is very reasonable to endure small sufferings in order to avert greater sufferings. Examining the object of reliance, it is not reasonable to be angry. Examining the cause of harm and whether there is fault or not: 'His weapon and my body, both are causes of suffering. If he takes my body with his weapon, who should I be angry with?' Like a leper, whose body is like a human form, unbearable to touch, full of suffering. If I cling to this body out of desire, then when it is harmed, who should I be angry with? Some harm out of ignorance, and some become angry out of ignorance. Which of them is without fault? And which is the one with fault?' Thus examine. Examining what one has vowed: Even a Hearer, who is engaged in the benefit of himself alone, should not be angry because he cannot endure. How much more so should I, who from the time of generating the mind of enlightenment, have vowed to accomplish the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings. What need is there to say about engaging in the benefit of others and completely taking on all sentient beings? Thinking in this way, generate the strength of patience. Potowa also said: 'One should not commit evil deeds against the Buddha's teachings. If one experiences even a little harm and does not cultivate patience, saying "This person is destroying the teachings from the root," that is wrong. Doing so abandons the vows, and in reality, it is destroying the teachings from the root. We do not have a common Buddhism; if one's own vows are broken, that is personal ruin.' Gewogpa's yak swatted its tail, and Atiśa struck its leg with a whip. Letting go of it is like feeling happy to be released from the burden of plowing. Do not hold on to the one who harms you; confronting him will only make you more unhappy. Second, it is reasonable to generate compassion: All sentient beings, from beginningless time, have not been without being one's parents and other relatives and friends in samsara. They are impermanent, facing death, and tormented by the three sufferings. Moreover, they are deluded by the demon of afflictions, even destroying their own benefit in this life and the next. I should generate compassion for them.
