If someone is harmed because they are forced by others, then it is very inappropriate to be angry. For example, some people who are possessed by spirits and controlled by them want to harm or even beat those who are helping them to be freed from the possession. But because they are controlled by the spirit and are not in control of themselves, we should not be angry with them, but should try to exorcise the spirit. Similarly, when a Bodhisattva is harmed, one should think that it is because the harmer is controlled by the demon of afflictions and is not in control of themselves. Therefore, do not be angry with that person, but think that in order to free him from afflictions, I will strive to practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva. As it says in the Four Hundred Verses: "Anger is also held by a demon, just as a doctor is not angry but treats the disease. The Buddha sees afflictions as the enemy, not the person associated with afflictions." The teacher Chandrakirti also said: "Here, sentient beings are not at fault, but afflictions are the fault. The wise, having thus distinguished, do not become angry with sentient beings." As it is said. Although many reasons are given in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, this reason is easy to understand and is a powerful antidote to anger. In the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it is also said that one should cultivate the mere concept of Dharma in order to endure harm, which is consistent with the reason here, so one should practice it repeatedly until one gains certainty about it. If those sentient beings had autonomy, then there would be no suffering, because they do not want suffering, and they also have autonomy. Furthermore, when they are driven by strong afflictions, they even harm themselves, whom they cherish very much, such as committing suicide, jumping off cliffs, harming themselves with thorns and weapons, cutting off food, and so on. Since that is the case, what need is there to mention harming others? Thinking in this way, one should also prevent anger. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: "Thus, everything is under the power of others, and because of their power, they have no autonomy. Knowing this, one will not become angry with things that are like illusions." And "Therefore, whether it is an enemy or a friend, if you see them doing something unreasonable, think that it is caused by such a condition, and think in this way and be happy. " If

If it could be achieved as desired, since no one wants suffering, then all sentient beings would not have suffering befall anyone. Thus it is said. When controlled by afflictions, they even kill themselves, how then could they not harm other beings at that time? Thus it is said. If one examines whether it is adventitious or intrinsic, it is unreasonable: the fault of harming others does not go beyond being either the intrinsic nature of sentient beings or not being their intrinsic nature. If it is intrinsic, then one should not be angry, just as one should not be angry at the heat and burning of fire. However, even if it is adventitious, one should not be angry. Just as when smoke and the like appear in the sky, one should not be angry at the sky because of its fault, one should think in this way and prevent anger. In the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra it says: If harming others is the intrinsic nature of children, then one should not be angry at them, just as one should not blame the burning nature of fire. However, if the fault is adventitious, and the intrinsic nature of sentient beings is certain, then one should not be angry either, just as one should not blame the smoke billowing in the sky. Thus it is said. If one examines whether harm is caused directly or indirectly, it is unreasonable: if one is angry at the harmer who directly causes harm, then one should be angry at sticks and the like as if they were persons. If one is angry at the harmer who indirectly causes harm, then just as sticks and the like are used by a person, one should also be angry at the person who whips the harmer with hatred (i.e., the instigator), because hatred whips the harmer, so one should be angry at hatred. Sticks and the like are used directly, if one is angry at the thrower, then the thrower is also whipped by hatred, if there is fault, one should be angry at hatred. Thus it is said. Therefore, if one is not angry at the stick, then one should not be angry at the thrower either. If one is angry at the thrower, then one should also be angry at hatred, and if one does not think in this way, then wisdom has gone down an unreasonable path, therefore one should generate certainty in the reasoning that is the same in all aspects, and one should direct one's mind towards not being angry at people, just as one does not get angry at a stick. In this case, one should not distinguish between whether the stick and the thrower have harmful intent or not, which can be understood through the reasoning of preventing autonomy as explained earlier. If one examines the cause that drives the harmer, then one should not be angry: experiencing the suffering caused by the harmer is not without cause, nor does it come from an incompatible cause.
