pa. Those who harbor hatred will also attack that lord and leader, wanting to kill him. That will make his friends and relatives sad. Even if they are won over with generosity, they will not trust him. In short, there is no one who dwells in happiness while being angry. Thus it is said. It is also said in the Jataka: When the fire of anger makes the face wither, even if adorned with ornaments, it will not appear beautiful. Even if one sleeps on a fine mattress, the sting of anger will cause suffering in the heart. One will forget what is beneficial to oneself, and tormented by anger, one will go to the evil path. One will decline from fame and accomplishment, and one's splendor will fade like the waning moon. Even if one is strongly restrained by friends and relatives, anger will cause one to fall into the abyss. Losing reason regarding benefit and harm, one will mostly act contrary to reason, and the mind will become foolish. By becoming accustomed to sinful deeds through anger, one will suffer for hundreds of years in the evil realms. Having done great harm, what more could even a bloodthirsty enemy do than that? Anger is the enemy within. Since I have recognized this, who can tolerate the decline of its power? Thus it is said. One should cultivate a firm conviction that these and other faults arise from anger, and repeatedly meditate on it. Thus, it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: There is no evil like hatred, and no austerity like patience. Therefore, one should diligently meditate on patience in various ways. As it is said, one should first see the benefits and faults, and then strive to cultivate patience in many ways. The reason for the first line is, as it is said in the commentary on the Bodhicharyavatara: Just as the amount of water in the great ocean cannot be determined by scales, so too the limit of its maturation cannot be determined. Therefore, there is no sin that throws such unpleasant fruits and harms virtue more than impatience. As it is said, even if it produces a very unpleasant result of maturation, if it does not destroy the root of virtue, then the sin is not so great. However, there are many evil deeds that combine the two faults of producing a severe result of maturation and destroying the root of virtue, such as the wrong view of denying cause and effect.

and abandoning the sacred Dharma, greatly despising Bodhisattvas and Lamas, and generating arrogance, etc., which should be understood from the Compendium of Trainings. There are three divisions of patience: not minding the harm-doer, willingly accepting suffering, and patience of definite conviction in the Dharma. The first, generating patience of not minding the harm-doer, has two aspects: preventing intolerance towards the harm done by the harm-doer, and preventing displeasure at the prosperity of the harm-doer and pleasure at their decline. The first has two aspects: preventing intolerance towards the obstruction of happiness and the infliction of suffering, and preventing intolerance towards the obstruction of honor, etc., and the three actions of insult, etc. The first has two aspects: showing that it is unreasonable to be angry, and showing that it is reasonable to be affectionate. The first has three aspects: it is unreasonable to be angry when examining the object, the subject, and the basis. In the first, it is unreasonable to be angry when examining whether there is autonomy or not: One should contemplate what reason there is to be angry with the harm-doer. Having contemplated in this way, if one thinks that it is because they first had the intention to harm oneself, and then through action obstructed one's own happiness or caused unpleasant suffering to one's body and mind. If they had the autonomy not to harm oneself, but deliberately harmed oneself, then is one angry? Or do they have no autonomy at all, but are involuntarily driven by others to harm oneself, and therefore one is angry? If it is the former, then one should not be angry, because they harm oneself because they have no autonomy. For example, if the seeds of previously habituated afflictions exist, and one encounters an object, and the causes and conditions of improper attention come together, then the mind of harm will arise, and even if one does not think so, it will be generated by these causes and conditions. If these causes and conditions are not complete, even if one wants to generate it, it will never arise. Thus, these causes and conditions generate the thought of wanting to harm, and this thought generates the actions of harming, and this action brings suffering to others, therefore, that person has no autonomy at all. He himself has become a slave of afflictions, completely controlled by them. One has no autonomy at all.
