Since all the great actions of the mind are abandoned, know that this is the supreme obstacle to attaining the essence of leisure for oneself and others, and should be abandoned like poison. Second, there are three aspects to generating patience to accept suffering: the necessary reasons for accepting suffering; the method of generating it; and a detailed explanation from the basis. First, as it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "The cause of happiness is occasional, the cause of suffering is extremely numerous." Since we constantly encounter some kind of suffering, it is essential to know how to transform it into the path. If not, as it is said in the Compendium of Trainings, one will either generate hatred, or develop a disheartened cowardice in meditating on the path, thus becoming an obstacle to engaging in virtue. Moreover, some suffering is caused by others, some is caused by past karma regardless of whether one strives on the path or not, and some, as will be explained below, occurs when one engages in virtuous deeds, but does not occur if one does not engage in them. Therefore, those things that are inevitably born due to past karma and immediate conditions cannot be avoided for the time being. Even if they occur, it is necessary to accept them. If one does not accept them, one will add the suffering of mental anguish generated by one's own thoughts on top of the original suffering, making it extremely unbearable. If one accepts it, even if the original suffering does not disappear, the suffering of mental anguish that makes one unhappy by focusing on it will never arise. Moreover, by finding a way to transform other suffering into the path, the suffering will become very small, and one will be able to endure it. Therefore, it is very important to generate patience to accept suffering. The second point is divided into two parts: refuting the attachment of being entirely displeased with the occurrence of suffering; and explaining that it is appropriate to accept suffering. First: If the occurrence of suffering can be remedied, there is no need to be displeased. If it cannot be remedied, then being displeased is of no use, it is neither necessary nor beneficial, and there are also faults. Because if one is very sensitive, even small suffering becomes very unbearable; if one is insensitive, even great suffering can be endured.

Thus, if there is a remedy, what is there to dislike? If there is no remedy, what good does it do to be unhappy? So it is said. Cold, heat, rain, and gatherings of wind, diseases, bonds, and beatings, etc., I will not be delicate, for if I do so, harm will increase. So it is said. Secondly, there are three: contemplating the qualities of suffering itself, contemplating the qualities of enduring the hardships of suffering, and the principle that if one becomes accustomed to it gradually, it will not be difficult. The first is that there are five qualities: like this, if there is no suffering, the desire to definitely renounce will not arise, so there is the quality of urging aspiration for liberation, and when struck by suffering, it destroys the height of arrogance and pacifies pride, so there is the quality of eliminating arrogance, and when experiencing intense feelings of suffering, since it arises from non-virtue, if one does not want that result, one must turn away from the cause, so there is the quality of avoiding sin, and being tormented by suffering is because one desires happiness, and if one needs happiness, one must accomplish virtuous causes, so there is the quality of delighting in accomplishing virtue, and judging from one's own experience, thinking that other sentient beings also suffer like this, compassion arises for those wandering in samsara. Through these and what they represent, one should also recognize other qualities and repeatedly train in the thought that this suffering is a desirable place, without suffering there is no renunciation, therefore, mind, you must be firm. So it is said. Furthermore, the qualities of suffering are that through weariness it pacifies arrogance, compassion arises for those in samsara, one avoids sin and delights in virtue. So it is said. Secondly, there are two: contemplating the benefit of the great meaning of liberation, etc., and contemplating the benefit of reversing immeasurable suffering. The first is that when I previously wandered in samsara, for the sake of slight, inferior desires, even though I knew that suffering would arise, I disregarded many sufferings and endured many meaningless sufferings that became the cause of experiencing immeasurable suffering in the future. Now that I clearly know that I am entering into the virtue of accomplishing immeasurable benefit for myself and others, it is reasonable to endure a hundred million times more suffering than before, let alone suffering that is smaller than that? One should repeatedly strengthen such thoughts. It is also said in the Bodhicharyavatara, for the sake of desires.
