Please, noble being, be patient and do not cause suffering. I will act in such a way that your wishes and the wishes of all sentient beings will be fulfilled. This was said by the forceful one, making the beggar understand in three ways. This is to abandon the fault of mutual distrust, but it is not without the fault of stinginess. In the Compendium of Trainings, stinginess is condemned in bodhisattvas. However, doing this seems to avoid the fault of not giving wealth due to stinginess. The Compendium of Perfections also says: If a beggar comes into view, but is too poor to give, in any case, do not let the beggar be disappointed, but soothe his heart with gentle words. If a beggar comes in the future, in any case, do not let him be disappointed or discouraged, but try to eliminate the faults of stinginess and strive to completely cut off greed. So it is said. Regarding relying on the antidote to the obstacles to giving, the obstacles are four, as they arise from the Compendium: unfamiliarity, decline, attachment, and not seeing the fruit. The first of these is: although there is something to give, one does not want to give it to the beggar. The antidote to this is: quickly recognize that this fault is because I have not practiced giving in the past. If I do not give now, I will not like giving in future lives. After thinking about this separately, give, and do not let the fault of unfamiliarity control you. The second is: because enjoyment is very small, the mind of giving does not arise. The antidote to this is: think like this, when I wander in samsara, I did not benefit others, because of past karma or being under the control of others, I suffered many unbearable sufferings such as hunger and thirst. If the suffering that arises from benefiting others, even if I die because of it, giving is the best for me, turning away the beggar is not like that. Even without those enjoyments, I can survive on vegetables and the like. After thinking like this, accept the suffering of poverty and give. The third is: the object of giving is very pleasing and excellent.

Attachment arises towards objects that have become (objects of desire), and therefore the mind of giving to beggars does not arise. The antidote to this is: quickly recognizing the fault of attachment, and recognizing that the inverted perception of clinging to one's own suffering as happiness will bring suffering in the future, thereby abandoning it and giving that thing away. Fourth: not seeing the benefit of perfect enlightenment arising from giving, but looking at the benefit of great enjoyment, thereby giving rise to the mind of giving. The antidote to this is: quickly recognizing that fault, and observing that all phenomena in general are destroyed moment by moment, and in particular that enjoyment will perish and separate, thereby dedicating everything that is given to great enlightenment. Merely looking at the ripening results of enjoyment and so on is: just as a merchant who unreservedly gives all goods to others for profit only gains profit and cannot gain merit, so too, one only gains great enjoyment and cannot gain liberation. The Four Hundred Verses says: "The giving that is given here will produce great fruit. Receiving and completely giving are despised like trade profits." Second, mere mental giving is: going to a solitary place, gathering inward, and with a pure mind and sincere heart, imagining and transforming various vast and immeasurable objects of Dharma to be given, and believing that they have been given to sentient beings. In this way, immeasurable merit can be increased with little effort, and this is also the way that a Bodhisattva gives with wisdom, as has been said in the Bodhisattva Grounds. Even if one does not have wealth, one should do this, as stated in the Questions of Good Arms Sutra, but it is not that those who have wealth cannot do it either. How to give with wisdom when there is no enjoyment: This is the case until the first ground of pure superior intention is attained. After attaining that ground, it is impossible to lack enjoyment. As stated in the Bodhisattva Grounds: "Thus, a Bodhisattva does not have those enjoyments until he has attained purity of intention, and gives with wisdom as if he had no possessions. What is the Bodhisattva's pure superior intention like?"
