These are not requests arising from the depths of the heart, but merely superficial displays. Not giving those things would not result in transgression, but giving them would lead to transgression. Apart from these situations, when there is a need to give the body in charity, it should be given. Specifically, this includes dividing limbs and giving them away permanently, and temporarily giving oneself as a servant, etc., to fulfill the needs of others in accordance with the Dharma. The detailed explanation of whether to give external objects is divided into two: the way of not giving external objects and the way of giving external objects. The first case has five aspects: From the perspective of time, it is not permissible to give, for example, giving afternoon food to monks and nuns and those observing the eight precepts. From the perspective of the recipient, it is not permissible to give: giving leftover food and drink to those who strictly observe vows; giving food and drink contaminated by excrement, urine, saliva, mucus, vomit, pus, and blood; giving garlic, onions, meat, etc., to those who do not eat them and do not drink alcohol, and to those who, although they want to eat these foods and drinks, have vows that prevent them from enjoying them, as well as giving things contaminated by them; giving children and servants, etc., to those who have expressed their intention to give and are happy, but are unfriendly, to yakshas and rakshasas, and to those who are forcibly oppressed or ungrateful and forgetful; giving these things to sick people who are not suitable to eat or who, even if suitable, ask for them without restraint; giving these things to those who are extremely greedy and ask for food even when they are full; giving scriptures to heretics who seek faults, and to those who do not want to understand the meaning of the scriptures but only value wealth, and so on. It is said in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* that this should be understood as it appears in the summary of the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra's* *Determination Section*. As it is said: If one gives written Dharma scriptures to beggars with childish intelligence, it will lead to transgression. Begging from others in order to give to them will also lead to transgression. Only if I think that I can get this person to accept and believe in these profound Dharmas, only in that case is it permissible.

If one gives with the mind, there is no fault. If, for sentient beings who believe in scriptures that have been altered to resemble the holy Dharma, or scriptures of heretical teachings, one causes them to write those scriptures, or gives scriptures that have already been written and are in hand, or begs from others and gives them, then there will be faults. A Bodhisattva should also erase the scriptures that have already been written and are in hand, and have them written as the scriptures of the Buddha, or one should also fully understand that those scriptures are meaningless, and should proclaim only the good to others. If someone comes to beg for scriptures that have not been written, the Bodhisattva should fully ask him what he will do with them, and if he says that he will sell them and enjoy them. If the Bodhisattva thinks that the scripture is prepared for the sake of the Dharma, then he should not give it to him, but if he has wealth, he should give him wealth. If he does not have wealth, then there is no fault in not giving either. If it is not prepared for the sake of the Dharma, then by all means, in order for him to enjoy it happily, he should give that scripture itself. Similarly, if someone begs because he wants to write a very bad text, there is no fault even if he does not give it. Just as with someone who wants to copy a very bad text, it is the same with someone who wants to copy a medium text. If one does not give to someone who begs because he wants to copy a particularly excellent text, then one should know that this is with fault. Thus it is said. From the point of view of the basis, the situation in which it is not permissible to give is: when one's own need for the scripture has not been fulfilled, and one does not have the stain of stinginess, when someone begs because he wants to know, giving him the scripture, and so on. The reason why this should not be given is: giving such a Dharma gift is for the purpose of accomplishing any of the three needs, if one does not give, then the latter two needs will be more, if one gives, then there will be no more. Moreover, the first need does not need to be accomplished, like this, one does not have the stain of stinginess, so there is no need to remove the affliction of stinginess. If one does not give, then one will see more accumulations of wisdom, if one gives, then it will not be more.
