Having gone somewhere, say this: I have a great deal of wealth here. Now, in order to perfect the perfection of generosity, I need beggars. If you meet beggars, do not turn them away, but either take from my wealth and give to them, or bring them to me. Also, praise my generosity. Having instructed in this way, because there is no loss of wealth and one is happy, one does as instructed. In this way, one plants the seeds for removing the stain of miserliness in them. Gradually, through habituation, one will also give small amounts of wealth oneself, and relying on small non-attachment, one will obtain intermediate, and relying on intermediate, one will obtain great. Similarly, to one's own preceptor, disciple, and friends who are greedy and unable to give, or who do not have wealth, give wealth and have them make offerings to the Three Jewels, while one does not do it oneself. This will accumulate a great deal of merit, and will also subdue the afflictions of some others, fulfill the wishes of some for the Dharma, and become a cause for gathering and maturing beings. Similarly, if one does not have wealth oneself, one should accumulate wealth through crafts and work, and then give it away. Or, to the poor and miserly, one should also speak to others about the Dharma words of wanting to give. Or, one should send those who come begging to the homes of wealthy people with faith, and one should also go there and help them make offerings as much as one can. Furthermore, one should also choose the items to be given, giving the best ones first, and one should also give away all of the items that have been prepared for giving. There are two types of objects: a brief indication of objects that can be given and objects that cannot be given, and a detailed explanation. The first is: the object that is given immediately produces a feeling of happiness that is free from the cause of bad migrations, and what is ultimately beneficial is abandoning evil or engaging in virtue, and even if it does not immediately feel happy, but is ultimately beneficial, a bodhisattva should give it to others. The object that is given immediately produces suffering and is ultimately harmful, and what immediately feels happy but is ultimately harmful, one should not give to others. The second is: a detailed explanation of inner objects that can and cannot be given, and outer objects that can and cannot be given. The first is: inner objects that cannot

If you understand the method of giving, then you know that the opposite of that is what should be given, so first we should explain the methods of what should not be given. There are three aspects to this. From the aspect of time, what should not be given is: Although a Bodhisattva has from the beginning resolved to give their body etc. to sentient beings, they should not give even if someone asks for their flesh etc. until great compassion, which will not be disgusted by the hardship of asking for the flesh of the body etc., has not developed. As it says in the Compendium of Trainings: 'What kind of diligence is it that makes one weary? It is when those who are weak in strength undertake heavy burdens, or engage for a long time, or whose devotion has not fully matured, engage in difficult tasks. For example, giving away one's own flesh and so on.' This has already given the body to sentient beings, however, this is merely avoiding using it at the wrong time. Otherwise, the Bodhisattva will become weary of those sentient beings, thereby destroying the seed of Bodhicitta. Therefore, the great mass of fruit will be destroyed. The Sutra of the Noble Sky Treasure says: 'Desire at the wrong time is the work of Mara.' It also says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: 'Until the thought of compassion is purified, one should not give away this body, one must make this body, in this and other lives, a cause for accomplishing great meaning.' From the aspect of necessity, one should not give away the body for trivial needs. As it says in that text: 'The supreme Dharma is the body of practice, one should not harm it for trivial matters, if one acts in this way, one will quickly fulfill the wishes of sentient beings.' From one's own side, if one is free from the obstacles to giving such as stinginess, and from the other's side, if not giving away the body is necessary to accomplish the benefit of many sentient beings, one should not give even if someone asks for limbs etc. If someone asks in order to make oneself do evil deeds that harm oneself and others, such as killing, then one should not give oneself to others even for a moment. From the aspect of the beggar, if it is a god of the Mara class or a sentient being deluded by them, asking for limbs etc. with an arrogant attitude, one should not give, because it is harmful to them themselves. One should not give to madmen and those with disturbed minds either.
